Following a well-received Oppositehouse Vol 1, 2 and 3, The Opposite House has released Oppositehouse Vol 4 with tracks from a sampling of China's younger musical talent. This fourth edition limited release, like the first three, has been specially created for guests to enjoy in-house or to take away as a gift, but it is not for sale.
Oppositehouse Vol 4 features a collection of 10 tracks that represent some of the music-makers of a very unique generation born after 1985; from Mr. Graceless, a group formed while in college in 2008 with an average age of 23, to Pumi, a group dedicated to the preservation of Chinese ethnic minority music as heard in their haunting 'Tui Mo Song' (millstone) to 21-year-old rapper song-writer, JR Fog.
The musicians on the album employ modern rock guitars, Tibetan sacred bells, classical piano and traditional san xian (three stringed) instruments. As such, this fourth album showcases how today's confident Chinese youth are following their own direction with an evolving sense of individuality while wrestling to resolve who they are in today's rapidly growing modern China.
The album's cover art, 'My Space' was contributed by artist Zhu Penghong, who is a student at Beijing's Central Academy of Fine Arts. Zhu's work and creative process has been described as being able to liberate oneself from the mundane daily existence and allowing a retreat into the inner self. Zhu was nominated by his instructors at CAFA to participate at Red Gate Gallery's 20th anniversary exhibition 'Two Generations – Twenty Years of Contemporary Chinese Art' in 2011. His work has been collected by the CAFA museum and White Rabbit Museum of Contemporary Chinese Art in Sydney, Australia.
"Like every Oppositehouse album, the fourth has a very distinct personality, in this instance, of being young and explorative. We are thrilled to hear the voice and talent of a younger generation and by their boldness to accept new things. We appreciate the contribution of the artists and Universal Music for putting together these expressive tracks," says Anthony Ross, Area General Manager for Swire Hotels, Beijing.
