On October 18th, a long line of fans extended for blocks from the Union Square Ballroom. As the fans shuffled in, the Taiwan Music Festival at the CMJ Music Festival began with two explosive performances from Taiwanese indie bands 831 and Chemical Monkeys. However, as DJ Chung Hua approached the stage, followed by MC 40, vocalists Aisa and Harry, the crowd's excitement erupted because they knew international mandarin pop sensation Da Mouth (大嘴巴) was about to take the stage.

Here in the cultural center of the world, the members of Da Mouth expressed their excitement and honor at being able to entertain their New York fans and representing Taiwan on this global stage. Though Taiwanese pop culture is extremely prevalent in all parts of Asia, the band truly appreciated the opportunity to bring a slice of the current Taiwanese artistic movement to the Big Apple. Despite having a primarily pop-driven music culture, the developing Taiwanese music scene is still thriving, evident through the diversity of bands that attended CMJ.

Da Mouth's music style is constantly evolving and is noted for its varied influences. Formed in 2006, Da Mouth came about just as Taiwanese music producers decided to create the nation's own hip-hop group. The producers then scouted around the world and found the four present members. However, as the band matured, their music style also evolved. Though the band originally stayed within hip-hop and R&B, recent years has seen Da Mouth ambitiously venturing into other genres such as pop, dance, and even dubstep. The members' very international background also adds a new dimension to their style. Producer/DJ Chung Hua and Aisa's Japanese influence allows them to incorporate influences from the Japanese electronic scene, while Harry and 40's experience in the Americas helped shape their abilities as well.

After CMJ Festival, Da Mouth hopes to head on more tours so that they can reach out to more fans in the world. They firmly believe that events like CMJ allow more artists like them to bring a new perspective about Taiwanese artists to the global stage. New York will definitely hear from this impressive band of wonderful musicians again.
