gilli moon doesn't like to capitalize on herself. Perhaps a small g & m is proof of an upcoming star who doesn't want to inflate her ego now that she's infiltrating Californialand. And an invasion it is. Having moved from Australia where she studied classical piano and hit the stage in musicals like The Wizard of Oz, after only a couple of years in CA, she's got a few songs in films, has won awards, and has kicked open a slice of online presence for herself that's winning her global fans as well.
One of the awards comes from The Netherlands Song Expo, where 'Plenty' won 1st place. Good thing it's being sent around as one of the early singles from this disc, because it Is a little bit of heaven. Strong guitar. A pop formula that has worked well from Abba to McCartney, it is Instantly hot and memorable, helped on by gilli's rather helpless girlie voice that just makes you want to stand up to anyone who's pitting wits against her. 'flying, over oceans of empty silence. floating in my dreams I'm my own innocence. will I find my arrow where I aimed so high and mighty, and my dignity?' Yes.
There's something distinctly Bowie-driven about this one. Like listening to a female Scary Monsters, with a dose more vulnerability and greater sound from the backing players. gilli is a fine poet, everything stems from that growth. 'u don't control me, my creativity it's my own mystery your lack of synergy so don't suck me into the vortex 'cause it's just sex and I'm tired of playing games.' This is 'Disgrace', one more reason she's just a temperamental angel in a down to earth world that doesn't believe in susceptible mindframes. The music keeps pounding, the static cling floats thru this life, the electronic hums seek out reception of a better terrestrial sphere.
'Why Do You Love Me Still?' is like listening to a beautiful, heartfelt musical ballad sung on the fire escape, as an ambulance or something passes for a few bars in the background. This one certainly proves that gilli would be great in Rent, or maybe Jeckyl & Hyde. If she ever feels like taking a pay cut, go to Broadway, girl. Or write your own show. Because Still is a pleasure, drunk horns and all.
This moon blends like a peacock. You wonder at the beauty of all those colors, but somehow, you couldn't imagine what she would look like without all musical hues. Interesting, and utterly arresting.
