Cargo Solo - Somewhere To Sleep
Artist: Cargo Solo (www.cargosolo.com)
Title: Somewhere To Sleep
Genre: Alt-Pop
Were I to cast this cd, I would recast it to go in the other direction. The strong, fuller band sound to the ballad 'Somewhere To Sleep' is reminiscent of a Liz Phair quirkiness, high on drums and a bass that is running on Vicks fumes. It's a sleepy song with shadows at the edges, ably painted by Mo Tavano's voice and sparse synth work. 'In the depths of your repression / in my own besotted way / you can hardly be blamed for my sense of shame.' Big applause for finally bringing back the word besotted!!
Nah, forget the first sentence of the 1st paragraph there, having another listen to the opener, 'Tell Me I'm Beautiful' gets my vote for 2nd best song, mainly because it relies more on Alexander Gil's electric-razor guitar than on Mo's keyboards. Sometimes I could do without the synth, as in the intro to 'Surface of the Moon' even though when it moves into the vocal section, Mo makes it a beautician's piece - hair up, perfume on, dressed to lovely perfection. A brilliant dayshine tune to stroll thru the park with.
This is obviously a self-released EP, but the songs are melodic and catchy. One can't help but be impressed by them, and I know that if they had more money for the disc, a bigger sound would only help the intimacy more. Like a Hooverphonics nudge.
But the songwriting for the 5 songs here, that's the key. 'Candidly self-reflective lyrics.' Yes, that's a fine description of one woman in front of 4 guys. David Hernandez is especially adept at styling his rhythm work to dress up some of the bluer tunes.
There's much the 'live sound' apparent here, studio or not. Like listening to a confident and audience-ready band at an acoustic festival. The congregation will love them, even if they have managed to slip in an electric guitar
