Artist: Aaron Rosand (www.aaronrosand.com)
Title: Sibelius & Khachaturian Violin
Label: Vox Music Group (www.voxcd.com)
Genre: Classical

This is Aaron Rosand's 20th album, and at the ripe ol' age of 73, he shows absolutely no sign of slowing down. As expected with masters like Jascha Heifetz and Eugen Prokop (to which Aaron has a certain similar style and flair), just listening to the cd will not tell you the player's age. His fingering and spry technique are just as crisp and telling as on his very first album. And with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra behind him (with conductor Kees Bakels at the helm), his masterful rendition of these classics is only enhanced more clearly.

In 1930 Rosand took up the violin for intensive study at the usual age of 3. At 9 he was playing Chicago's Civic Opera House and the next year did the famous Mendelssholn Concerto with the Chicago Symphony. He studied with Leon Sametini at Chicago Musical College, Efrem Zimbalist at the Curtis Institute of Music, and made his professional debut in 1948 in New York's Town Hall. After which began a series of highly successful albums, such as recording all of Beethoven's works for piano and violin.

Grammophone and the New York Times love him, and fans can't get enough. At first, the only thing I was even a little bit disappointed about on this year 2000 album was the lowness of sound, but just one turn up of the dial, and 3 subsequent listenings, cured me of that. All 65 minutes of Sibelius and Khachaturian are sublime and powerful, alternating in instrumental dialogue between the racing solo voice of Aaron and the big booming chase of the orchestra.

For the classical minded who have probably heard several takes of these well-known pieces, don't let that stop you from this one. Certainly not when amazon.com, etc. has it for just $8.97. Certainly one of the best deals around. How they can go that low when the other cd companies are making us pay $17 at Tower, I'll never know. So - isn't it worth treating yourself?
