Roots: Born to an artistically talented family at Olathe, Kansas. He was primarily raised in nearby Paola, Kansas when his parents settled there upon returning the family home after many years of travels via military service. Chris demonstrated an early aptitude for music while a member of his church youth choir program and school bands during high school. Along with family members and the church choir director, his primary musical influences during these formative years were: Mr. Charles Molina, a local professional saxophonist; and also his school band director, Mr. James R. Fuchs - a clarinetist.
Background: His professional musical activities began after he entered military service bands as a saxophone and clarinet player. During this prolific period of musical growth, Chris also developed professional skills as a composer and arranger. He has also been fortunate to have already performed extensively throughout the US, western Europe, and the Mediterranean prior to relocating back home to the Kansas City area.
Education: Chris has studied woodwinds through instruction at the Armed Forces School of Music, and at the college-level under many fine instructors, including: Dr. Frank Sidorfsky, Mr. Bill Archer, Mr. Paul DeMarinis, and Mr. Jerry Greene. He studied composition and arranging at the Armed Forces School of Music, with Mr. O’tress Tandy, and even through correspondence from the Berklee College of Music for several years while living overseas. He maintains a continuing self-development program of musical studies and research as well.
Experience: Chris has had the opportunity to perform music of most all styles, with numerous nationally and internationally known artists, in addition to having been a featured jazz saxophone soloist with The Hof Symphony Orchestra (Germany) at the age of 22. He also developed and taught the jazz program as a member of the Performing Arts Faculty at the University of Missouri-Rolla for over 12 years.
Recognition: Subsequently, several of his compositions and arrangements have been performed by numerous groups and even on Italian RAI television. In 1995, one of his compositions and arrangements for large jazz ensemble titled Daedalus, was awarded the only Five Star Award of Merit for that year from the National Federation of Music Clubs.
Activities: Based in the Kansas City-area, his professional focus is now solely on the performance aspects of music. Chris is a full-time musician and composer who instructs student musicians, performs, and even continues to study in Kansas City with one of the area's foremost performing musicians, Mr. Ahmad Alaadeen.
Organizations: Chris is a Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) writer affiliate, his active professional memberships include: International Association of Jazz Education (IAJE), Kansas City Jazz Ambassadors, Kansas City Federation of Musicians Local 34-627, and the Mutual Musicians Foundation of Kansas City.
Documentation: Chris has also realized the independent production of several original works on compact disc. Music from his debut CD release, "4Jazz: Time Flies", can be heard on jazz radio programs throughout the US and as far away as the Ukraine. Research: Chris has developed knowledge and skill using music programs and applications which allow production of studio quality music and publication of scores with parts. He has had opportunity to collaborate with musicians from various distant locations using the Internet. His original music is also now reaching a significant global audience through his work with jazz on the Internet as well.
