Sirion Sewell…. What a commanding name; it roars with power. When people hear my name I want them to think of great wealth, power, high status and smarts. I want them to associate it with the great legacy I left behind in the wonderfully ever-changing music industry. I would like to become a household name, a respected role model and a leader whose blueprint will be followed by many to come. To obtain this, I have begun to work hard, network and to form extensive plans of action.
At age 11, I knew my love was music and that I couldn’t live without it so I decided that I had to have a job in the music industry. I listened to KUBE93 and KRIZ incessantly and whenever a musical event or artist came to town, I was right there. Over time, I met everyone at both radio stations and became a known face around the buildings. By middle school and early high school I had a very popular, ever-growing Autograph Book filled with pictures and autographs of the hottest music artists and actors. I participated in many job shadows and other music related internships to keep myself immersed in the industry and learning at an incredulous rate.
In April of 2002, my junior year of high school, I started my own company, Muzik ‘N’ Axion Entertainment. We specialize in Autograph/CD release parties, artist promotion, publicity and special events. For my first assignment, I linked up with The Seattle Medium Newspaper as a freelance journalist, to cover the Evolution Tour featuring Usher, Faith Evans and Nas. This was my first major experience working in the music industry and journalism field. My goal was to obtain interviews, but after many attempts failed and I scored meet and greets with Nas and Usher, front row tickets and an invite to Faith Evans’ after party, I was very pleased with the outcome and further motivated. I wrote a concert article and took photographs that were to be used as The Seattle Medium’s Entertainment Feature Story. Mind you, I was only 17, playing an adult game but already off to a great start.
In May of 2002, I was given the opportunity to intern for Seaspot Media Group; a hot local music based Media company on the rise. Due to my dedication, strong work ethic and love for the music industry, I single handedly helped to propel Seaspot Media Group to new levels. I write for Seaspot Magazine and Seaspot.com, take photographs, coordinate and conduct interviews with national recording artists; I am a liaison between major record labels, update our online calendar and am a Team Captain of the Greater Seattle Def Jam Records Street Team. Since my time at Seaspot, I have been dubbed the “Industry Insider” due to my able ness to achieve all things “impossible.” I am the only teenager among the many hardworking adults who work at Seaspot. I get artist interviews, inside information, fly from coast to coast, promote, network with industry execs and still manage to do well in school, run my own company and work a part time job.
Other projects, I’ve been involved with are the “Hot Rod and Leah LaBelle Projects.” I have been instrumental in helping to promote and manage young artists, by connecting them with music artists and executives, handling publicity and promotion, organizing and producing press kits, getting them hometown support by opening for national recording artists, helping them get signed and many other things. To take on all of these tasks and prepare to attend college in the fall is a major responsibility; I do it all willingly and freely because of my desire to help others and love of music.
To help sharpen my skills of journalism, my counselor decided that it would be best for me to enroll in the Tyee High School Signal Newspaper. Through this class, I found that my writing talents increased, my views of writing changed and that with my level of experience and knowledge, I became a vital asset to The Signal offering them opinions from people of color and of the entertainment industry.
In my quest to share my love of music and education with others at Tyee High School, I proposed requests to have national recording artists come and speak to Tyee’s student body. Since the start of my high school career it has been my goal to have music artists come to my school and speak. Due to unforeseen circumstances none of the widely supported requests were advanced upon, though it is still my goal to make this dream a reality.
As far as my future goes, in June of 2003 I graduated from high school, received a $1000 college scholarship and things have really begun to roll. I recently connected with Variety- the Children's Charity of the Pacific Northwest which is an international, 501 c3 non-profit organization dedicated to providing resources and services to disadvantaged and disabled children while also celebrating and empowering youth. In partnership with agencies, we create unique opportunities for children to participate in the Northwest's rich arts, sports and entertainment culture. My role at Variety is to work with record labels, venues, event producers and others to coordinate and produce special events for kids, help to drive Gold Heart sales through school presentations, secure artists & entertainers as spokespersons, assist in assembling a Gold Heart Performance Troupe, develop Young Variety, write monthly newsletter articles and help youth to actualize their dreams.
I plan to stay in Seattle for two more years attending a junior college and then transfer to Knoxville College and major in “Music Business Management”. While in college, I also plan to participate in an internship for a major record label and begin my exciting and prosperous career in the music industry, running my own company, Muzik ‘N’ Axion Entertainment.
After years of eagerness and wanting something so bad and in less than one year, accomplishing all of my goals, at 18 I can say I am truly happy living my dreams and am awaiting the arrival of my bright future.
I hope to establish my name, Sirion Sewell as a solid name, forever etched into the minds of hip-hop heads everywhere. I want to leave behind a reputable and successful company that will go on to provide for my friends, family, loved ones and other young people in pursuit of their dreams, like myself.
I am Sirion Sewell, Industry Insider Extraordinaire.
