My name is Carolyn Ballen. I am the founder and sole producer of The Indie Music Forum, a one day traveling event that focuses on music business education.
My career started at Disc Makers, when I joined the family business and became the third generation to work in the music industry. Disc Makers introduced and educated me about business and its core marketing strategies, while my father made sure that I kept a strong sense of ethics and morality. It was a rich learning environment while I learned and managed our Media Buying and Merchandising as well as the coordination of our Music Conference involvement, Sponsorships and production of the necessary marketing materials.
I have authored several articles aimed at providing very specific information on a variety of topics such as the importance of your database, making the most of your music conference experience and how to be more successful at getting sponsorship. With this kind of information, I've also started to branch out into other areas where I can continue to educate about the music industry. I host a weekly talk radio show on Wednesday nights on www.nwez.net as well as teaching a course called Event Planning & Promotion at Baruch College in New York. I'm additionally working on an "Indie Music Forum" book that will turn my Indie Music Forum articles into a more expansive resource that will pull from much more of my past experience.
Many of my articles have already been featured on Web sites including MarsMusic.com, Indie-Music.com, MusicDish.com, TheIndependentArtist.com, StarPolish.com and GetSigned.com. They have appeared in several online newsletters such as Music Morsels, Kenny Love's B# Newsletter and The Princeton Songwriters – NJ Chapter. In print, they have appeared in The Angel City Voice and Disc Makers' Fast Forward newsletter. Most Recently, Mars Music has asked me to join their team of Ask The Pro's, a feature column on their Web site. It's really an honor to be among the other distinguished helpful content creators that participate in all of these projects.
I've traveled all over the country planning, moderating and speaking on panels at various music related events such as SXSW, The Philadelphia Music Conference, Nemo, LMNOP, The Folk Alliance, Kanahwhapalooza, The Songwriters Hall of Fame, Millenium Music Conference, Women In Music, The RockrGrl Music Conference and many more. With my business and marketing experience in hand, I created The Indie Music Forum. I'm proud to have an event where I can provide interested knowledgeable speakers and information to musicians, managers or small record labels just starting out in the music business. In additional to a wealth of helpful content, it was important to me that The Indie Music Forum also provide a friendly, worthwhile networking environment for registrants and speakers alike.
In January of last year, I managed a tour from L.A. to Philadelphia for a band called Sonny Bones out of L.A. I also do live and candid photography whenever possible.
