Eric Baptiste Named CEO Of SOCAN
The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN) announced its board of directors has named Eric Baptiste to serve as the organization's Chief Executive Officer (CEO), as of May 16, 2010, replacing André LeBel who announced his plans for retirement last year.
Baptiste currently holds the position of CEO of the International Confederation of the Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC), the World Federation of Copyright Societies with 225 member societies in 118 countries. Among his many achievements during his 12-year career at CISAC, Baptiste raised their profile through lobbying activities in many countries, and created the successful CISAC "World Copyright Summit." Prior to joining CISAC, Baptiste was CEO of a commercial radio station (95.2 Paris FM) serving the greater Paris area and Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Radio France International (RFI).
Warner Music UK Names New SVP, Commercial
Warner Music UK announced the promotion of Raoul Chatterjee to the position of SVP, Commercial, Warner Music UK. Chatterjee reports to Christian Tattersfield, CEO Warner Music UK and Chairman, Warner Bros Records UK. He replaces Alan Young, who left the company to pursue new opportunities in December.
In his new role, Chatterjee, previously Director, Commercial Innovation, Warner Music UK, will assume responsibility for all aspects of commercial strategy and operations. He will oversee all relationships with retail partners, both physical and digital, with a focus on ensuring that Warner Music UK's commercial approach continues to reflect the changing retail environment and the wide variety of ways in which fans consume music.
RealNetworks Names Mike Lunsford Executive Vice President, Music, Media, and Technology Solutions
Digital entertainment services company RealNetworks announced that Mike Lunsford has been named executive vice president of the Technology Products and Solutions and Media Software and Services divisions of the company. In addition, Mr. Lunsford will continue to oversee Rhapsody America, the company's digital music joint venture with MTV Networks.
In his prior role as executive vice president of strategic ventures, Mr. Lunsford was responsible for directing the strategy and operations for Rhapsody America. Before joining Real in 2008, Mr. Lunsford held a number of senior roles over eight years at EarthLink, Inc., including interim president and CEO. Mr. Lunsford also served on the Board of Directors of Helio, a joint venture between EarthLink and SK Telecom.
SMC Recordings Appoints David Newberg as Chief Financial Officer
Burgeoning San Francisco based SMC Recordings brings on industry veteran David Newberg as their new Chief Financial Officer. Newberg brings over twenty years of financial acumen from successful music and media properties such as EMI/Priority Records, WMG/Rhino Entertainment, Live Universe, and maniaTV. This is just one of the many exciting announcements the leading indie label has in store for this year.
David Newberg's wealth of experience includes his time as VP of Finance at Rhino Entertainment, a subsidiary of Warner Music where he directed company accounting for all business units, maintaining revenue which grew to 500 million globally. He served as Chief Financial Officer of Live Universe Inc., a start up company that owns over 40 social/music media, websites, where he was responsible for directing all company accounting, finance, and human resource functions. Previous to that he was Chief Financial Officer of Delta Entertainment Corporation, a self-distributing mid-sized entertainment company that wholesales audio and video products.
TWE Announces Resignation of Jim Litwak, President and Chief Operating Officer
Trans World Entertainment announced that Jim Litwak, President and Chief Operating Officer, has tendered his resignation, effective February 16, 2010. Robert J. Higgins, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer will take on the responsibilities of the President and Chief Operating Officer. The company is undertaking a search for a new head of merchandising and marketing.
"We wish Jim all the best and want to thank him for his hard work and effort," Mr. Higgins said.
"After 12 years in the entertainment retail space, it is time for me to pursue different avenues and opportunities. My time at Trans World will always be some of the greatest memories of my retail career," said Mr. Litwak.
J. Scavo Named Vice President, Global Digital Marketing, For Hollywood Records
J. Scavo has been named Vice President, Global Digital Marketing for Hollywood Records, it was announced by Ken Bunt, the label's Senior Vice President of Marketing. In his new post, Scavo is responsible for expanding the global reach of Hollywood artists through the use of various digital platforms and increasing the value-proposition to engaged fans the world over. He is based at Hollywood Records' Burbank headquarters.
This is Scavo's second tenure at Hollywood Records. He served as the label's Director of Artist Development from 2000 to 2006, when he left to become General Manager of MySpace Records. The Dana Point native graduated from UCLA before launching his music business career as a product development manager with BMG. From there he built his own artist management company before coming to Hollywood Records the first time, when he worked with artists such as Hilary Duff, Breaking Benjamin and Fastball. As General Manager of MySpace Records he was responsible for building out the label, leading all departments including A&R, marketing, business affairs and international. In addition to those more traditional label operations, J was able to greatly increase revenue with an array of groundbreaking integrated marketing programs around his artists in partnership with name brands like Toyota, Wendy's, University of Phoenix, and more.
L.J. Hayden Gutierrez Promoted To Senior Vice President, Partnership Development, Universal Music Group Distribution
Universal Music Group Distribution (UMGD), the award-winning sales and marketing division of Universal Music Group, has promoted L.J. Gutierrez to Senior Vice President of Partnership Development, it was announced today by Amanda Marks, Executive Vice President and General Manager and Cliff O'Sullivan, Senior Vice President of Group Marketing for the company. Formerly, Ms. Gutierrez served as Vice President of Retail Partnership Marketing for UMGD.
In this newly-created position, Ms. Gutierrez will oversee both UMGD's partnership marketing group and its non-traditional sales group. Both areas work closely with Universal Music Group labels to maximize marketing and sales opportunities on behalf of UMG artists. Gutierrez will also seek partnerships on behalf of UMGD companies Fontana, the leading independent distribution company and Vivendi Entertainment, a full-service film distribution company. The partnership marketing group has developed successful marketing campaigns with major consumer partners such as MasterCard, Coca-Cola and SC Johnson, while the non-traditional sales group has leveraged new sales channels with retailers such as Nordstrom and Tween Brands.
American Composers Orchestra Appoints George Manahan Music Director
American Composers Orchestra (ACO) is pleased to announce that conductor George Manahan will join the orchestra as Music Director. His tenure will begin with the 2010-11 season, during which he will lead all three of ACO's concerts presented by Carnegie Hall in Zankel Hall. Mr. Manahan will also continue in his post at New York City Opera, where he is in his twelfth season as Music Director. He will be ACO's third Music Director since its inception in 1977, following founding conductor Dennis Russell Davis (1977-2002) and Steven Sloane (2002-present).
George has built his international reputation on making strong cases for overlooked masterpieces, for reinvigorating warhorses, and trekking in uncharted musical territories. We all enthusiastically embrace his upcoming tenure here and look forward to a rich and energizing collaboration.
