CD Review: Pitbull
Genre: Hip Hop
Label: Tvt Records
Pitbull's Money Is A Major Issue stocks up on
hip-hop, dancehall, bass music, house, crunk and a bit
of sugary pop swirled around his Cuban-American
syntax. The advantages of having Lil Jon, Fat Joe and
Trick Daddy guest on the album are more than name
brand recognition. Lil' Jon's productions on a handful
of songs are different affairs from his usual pounding
“Culo" rides an infectious dwali riddim, "Shake It Up"
employs a pepped-up sugary dance beat and drops
another Afro-Latin beat on "Toma." "That's
Nasty" co-stars Jon and Joe, but it doesn't save the
mediocre song from its boring chant about the
definition of kinky sex. However, "Melting Pot" is
worthwhile because Trick Daddy's southern drawl and DJ
Khaled's melodramatic keys fit Pitbull's anxious
delivery. Another Latin connection from Miami to New
York is made on "I Wonder," a sweet cover of '80s
Bronx singer Lisa Lisa remade as a slower bluesy
string-picking piece. Crunk's habit of bringing terror
sounds to the dancefloor loom on the "305 Anthem."
Party-oriented, bilingua, and hungry, Pitbull's
musical bite should get tighter with each verbal grip.
