Best Of The Batch: Robert Plant And The Strange Sensation
Artist: Robert Plant And The Strange Sensation
Title: Mighty Rearranger
Label: Sanctuary Records
Download: “Mighty Rearranger”
This is Robert Plant’s first solo album since 2002. There was not a long wait this time and I thank him for that. His relevancy in music remains apparent on Mighty Rearranger. This band has been dubbed The Strange Sensation, although I found nothing strange about them, the play some very good rock ‘n’ roll and compliment Mr. Plant’s distinctive vocals superbly.
You do not hear the high pitched screaming anymore from the Led Zeppelin days, but Plant can still hold a note and is unmistakably the great rock singer we have know for several decades.
“Tin Pan Valley” and “Takamba” harkens back to good old days (‘70s Led Zep) with some meaty riffing, and the gentle folk Celtic influenced “All The Kings Horses,” shows Plant in a different light. He is softer and very tasteful opposed to the rocker we once witnessed bouncing around on the stage with golden locks flowing. Well, at least that is how I envision him when I think about his legacy. “The Enchanter” starts with a bluesy intro then melds into the Middle Eastern style that Plant adores, the bass kicks in and the tempo picks up and it starts to get more of rock feel, I have to say it-a very Zeppelinesque tone, and why not? That was great music and it fits his voice so well. “Dancing In Heaven” offers up a Byrds-like melody and Plant sounds just amazing. There is not an ounce of doubt that he has found a new home with this great band behind him.
I anticipated this CD being one of the better recordings of the year thus far, it did not disappoint. This excellent album will surely delight the Plant faithful and raise some eyebrows from the legions of Led Zep fans old and new. I would be watching for an SACD of this album in the not too distant future, its classic rock with one of finely aged vocalist on the planet leading the way. In short, rock music does not get much better than this.
