Artist: Jason Myles Goss With Julian Velard
Venue: Club Passim, Cambridge, MA , July 2, 2005
Genre: Singer/Songwriter

Having driven seven hours to make the gig (damn that holiday weekend traffic!), New Yawker Julian Velard proved none the worse for wear when it came time for him to win over another Bahston audience. Opening his dusky set with the Rawls-ian staccato soul of "Nighttime," Nitetime Velard played to his Harvard Square crowd with the conscientious objection "All in All" before delivering the spot-on Michael McDonald tribute "Why I Came." Among the many highlights of Velard’s set were the peopled pizzicato punches of "Darker Shade," the teasing TV theme of "Gone Away," and the appropriately gentle closer "kids," all of which demonstrated his intelligent songcraft and witty delivery.

When it was time for more local artist Jason Myles Goss to take the stage for his first Passim headliner, he was joined by acoustic bass monster Zack Hickman and dry drummer Eric Platz. After a bit of a slow start to the lush cry "Save Me," Goss picked up his picking, snapping into the energetic driving song "Too Young To Lose." After the Extreme tribute to a tragic loss called "Twilight Serenade," Goss clamped on the Blues harp for the husky homesick remembrance "Far from Home." "Shake ‘em Down" was a hefty Blues rocker that got the crowd going and Goss kept them up with the Bono-fied chugger "Dancing Scarlet" and, later, the Ellis Paul-ian call to groove called "Put a Record On." After infusing the mic with his rich vocals on the Mayer-esque tones of "Burning Daylight," Goss jumped the pond for the Gaelic twirls of "Irish Eyes." When the crowd called for more, Goss replied with the sopranod soul of "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted," leaving his fans something to ponder as they prepared to celebrate their independence.
