RealAudio: One Step Ahead & Red Rooster

On the plate tonight were two MysticMusic blues artists Vince Converse and Savoy Brown. Something old..something new..something borrowed..and something Blue! It was a marriage of old blues legends and new bluesmen borrowing on the legends of bluesmen who had come before them and passing on to bluesmen of the future.

Vince got thrown out onstage before the crowd at what used to be the hardcore rocking House of the Godfather of Rock, (Bill) Gazzaris which changed to Billboard and now the Key Club finished their baked potatoes. Fighting through resonant dissonance and some early sound problems which forced him to stop long enough to eject some undercover narcotics officers that were lurking about, the 26 year old Houston native proceeded to fire up a set of stinging blues based rock and roll in the realm of the mighty SRV. I don't know if he'll ever reach those heights, but with the help of capable bassist Mike Sykoski (who got lucky in more ways than one that night! wink & a nod know what I mean..thank god for sisters..) and drummer Bill Sauter of the Montana highland Sauters, he's on the right track. Like a good piece of meat, all he needs is some seasoning and he should come out alright. I'd recommend a second helping.

Now that everyone had finished their pate de fois & digested their duck a l'orange, it was time for the coup de gras or what turned out to be the main course! Legendary Bluesmen Savoy Brown stormed onstage and instigated immediate indigestion with the non-initiated and utter glee amongst the blues impresarios who were in attendance to witness the final show of the tour.

Nothing less than the master of the slow blues, you could hear the etchings of other famous guitar players who have copied the legendary guitar style and to hear it played by one of the original English Blues Guitar Legends was quite a thrill. Of course I'm talking about guitarist and producer Kim Simmonds who treated the enthusiastic crowd to a lesson in Blues 101 backed up by soulful bassist/vocalist Nathaniel Peterson and drummer Tommy Compton who filled in the gaps nicely. It was a truly educational experience and one I won't soon forget, as the echoes of searing blues licks were still in my head, the Key Club unceremoniously turned into a techno/house disco within minutes of Savoy's stage departure, so Vince and I surfed down Sunset to the Whiskey to catch SB hardcores 4DK and melt into the night.
