An all girl band from Orange County, California, The Daisy Chain recorded one album to their name before dropping completely out of sight. Originally released on the United International label in 1967, Straight or Lame is rarer than a cat with wings. Trying to find copies of the disc can be likened to looking for a needle in a haystack. However, Sundazed Records recently reissued the album, accompanied by an in-depth story on the band whose history has remained a mystery until now.
Not grounded in a set style, Straight or Lame aims to cover a variety of expressions. "Got to Get You into My Arms" and a version of Vera Lynn's "We'll Meet Again" illustrate The Daisy Chain's affection for funky soul samplings. Big, bold brass sounds anchor the ship on "I'll Come Runnin'," which bears a symphonic power pop feel smacking of substance and class. Lightly battered psychedelic seasonings on both "Zzotto" and "Run Spot Run" offer a peek into a quirkier side of the band. The keyboards twinkle, the hooks are strong enough to make a lasting impression and the vocals are very radio friendly. It's a shame The Daisy Chain didn't stick around long enough to fulfill their potential. There's no question, Straight or Lame is bound to satisfy the craving of any sixties pop rock fan.
