Giorgio Assumma Appointed President Of Italian Society Of Authors And Publishers (SIAE)
On October 17, 2005, in a decree of the President of the Republic of Italy, Mr Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, following the favourable opinion delivered by the relevant Commissions of the Italian Parliament, Mr Giorgio Assumma, solicitor, was appointed president of the Italian Society of Authors and Publishers. Among the priorities for the management of the Society, Mr Assumma stressed the adjustment to the conditions for the protection of copyright, which changed due to multimedia tools, new technologies and new UE laws.
Such adjustment aims to “better work for the economic protection of copyright, thus assuring more incomes for authors and publishers”. At the same time –according to the new president, SIAE must come back to its foreground role among collecting Societies all over the world and to develop relationship with EU countries and other foreign countries.
Giorgio Assumma had been designated president of SIAE at first vote at the Assembly of Members of Society, which took place in Rome on September 20.
Born in Civitavecchia on 29th November 1934, Giorgio Assumma is one of the most famous experts and solicitors of copyright and show business.
He is teacher of Publishing Law at the third University of Rome and of European Union Law at Lumsa University of Rome. He is president of Perseus International Foundation –International Studies for Social Communications, where –in cooperation with the Catholic University of Milan- courses for audiovisual authors take place. He is managing editor of collection “Law and Practice in cultural, entertainment and information activities” published by Cedam.
Giorgio Assumma is also author –together with professor Giuseppe Corasaniti- of the “Code of the Law of Show Business,” also published by Cedam. As author of several texts about the law of show business and copyright, he is interested in the rights of culture and show business.
In his first speech to the Assembly which had designated him, Mr Assumma said he had accepted to be president-designated because he thought of the SIAE in the past, of its great men, great battles which had made it so important, assets of the whole country, regardless of the role of authors, publishers and producers.
