Sassin's Xtraordinary Debut
SASSIN'S XTRAORDINARY DEBUT
Sydney-based Sassin has just unleashed his debut single, “Xtraordinary.” The song is a brooding, anthemic love song that melds infectious, house-tinged beats with an ‘80s pop sensibility and a sultry, Enrique-Iglesias-meets-George-Michael vocal styling.
Written by Sassin and New York DJ extraordinaire Mike Rizzo (who has notched an impressive eight No. 1 Billboard remixes, including Kylie Minogue's “Slow”), the single marks the official debut of an artist who has been mining the fringes of the local and international dance scene for the last five years.
A former drama student whose forays into musical theatre awakened his musical senses and led him to abandon his professional acting ambitions, Sassin initially established himself as a dance music vocalist, contributing vocals to an array of dance music compilations both in Australia and overseas, as well as touring the UK.
But the lure of singing and performing his own songs proved strong, and in 2004, Sassin decided to forego his burgeoning career as a dance music vocalist to focus on writing his own material. So he put every cent he had into recording a demo of the pop songs he'd written.
It was an act of faith that scored Sassin his solo deal and sent him on that fateful trip to New York. Australia will no doubt be hearing a lot more from this artist in the months to come!
MADONNA WELL HUNG
And no, we're not referring to Ali G's transvestite joke about the global superstar! We're obviously talking about Madonna's latest single, “Hung Up,” which has taken the world by storm, helping her new album, Confessions On A Dance Floor go to #1 in a whopping 25 countries since its November 15 release. These include Australia, UK, USA, Spain, Brazil, Belgium, Israel, Greece, Croatia, Canada, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Holland, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Mexico, Sweden, Taiwan, Chile, Denmark, Hong Kong and Portugal! She has now sold over 200 million albums worldwide including more than 4 million in Australia and has had eight #1 albums here.
On the new album, Madonna brilliantly re-invents dance music for our time. A stunning creative leap into the dazzling dimension of 'future disco,' these dozen new originals simultaneously capture the spontaneous thrill of the iconic superstar's early hits.
MUGGS' NEW LABEL
Cypress Hill's DJ Muggs has joined forces with critically acclaimed hip-hop duo Self-Scientific and formed a new label, Angeles Records. Angeles is the latest addition to the Method Recordings roster, Shock Records in-house hip-hop label.
The label's first two releases are DJ Muggs vs. GZA: Grandmasters, a unique collaboration between Muggs and Wu Tang Clan's GZA. The second release, Change, is the much-anticipated follow-up LP by one of LA's most talented, but underexposed groups, Self-Scientific. The duo is made up of Chace Infinite and DJ Khalil, who is long heralded as one of LA's best up and coming producers. Both albums are out now.
PAUL MAC BACK
Paul Mac is back! The follow up to his 2001 masterpiece has finally arrived. Panic Room is Mac's second album and is named after a home studio that he created in Sydney's inner west and where he recorded the entire album, which gives it an intense energy and emotions of the big city. This is in contrast to the debut, which was conceived in the Blue Mountains, which gave it a more chilled out feel.
Like its predecessor, the album features vocalists Abby Dobson and Peta Morris (who appears on the irresistible first single, “Sunshine Eyes”).
Other high profile guest singers this time around include Luke Steele from the Sleepy Jackson, Lenka from Decoder Ring and former Superjesus frontwoman Sarah McLeod.
Panic Room also features exciting new voices like Papua New Guinea's Ngaiire (who also appeared on Australian Idol in 2004) and NZ soul sensation Aaradhna. A fine follow up!
In related news, Mac's Dissociatives buddy Daniel Johns has quashed those rumours of Silverchair's demise by confirming that there will be another Silverchair album. He says, "We're totally enjoying playing together at the moment. We're looking forward to eventually doing some gigs to try out the new songs and to then hopefully making a new album."
The trio are currently locked away creating some new material before taking a short break over Christmas and then doing more rehearsals through early 2006. Following this, they will 'road test' some of the new music by doing a few select Australian shows and will then start recording their new album around next May. It will most likely be released in late 2006 or early 2007 and more extensive touring is penciled thereafter.
UNIVERSAL SIGN STARKY
Universal Music has announced the signing of Australian rock band Starky , a band that has managed to kick the cages of musical conformity and poke at complacency with shards of broken drum sticks. The now five-piece group, who were known as Pennidredful in a former lifetime, have just released their self titled EP which was recorded in the UK by renowned producer David Eringa (Manic Street Preachers, Idlewild, Ash, Starsailor, Kylie Minogue, etc).
The EP shatters the tired mould of Australian pop-rock, to deliver three vigorous guitar-driven tunes. Lead by the powerfully reverberant vocals of , watch this Sydney quintet carve their share of the airwaves across the country. An album is expected in early 2006.
It's hard to believe that the ageless Beastie Boys have been going strong for some 24 years now, but that is indeed the case. With this in mind, Capitol Records has decided to celebrate this milestone with the release of a greatest hits collection, Solid Gold Hits.
The 15-track collection covers their first platinum-mining expeditions with “No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn” and “Fight For Your Right” through west coast detours “Shake Your Rump,” “So What'cha Want” and “Sabotage,” up to last year's return to form with “Ch-Check It Out,” “An Open Letter To NYC” and “Triple Trouble,” and all points between.
The album is out now as a one-CD standard package as well as a CD/DVD package that includes the videos that accompany each track and much more!
Congratulations to Sydney three-piece Wolfmother, who have picked up the inaugural J Award - Triple J's Australian Album of the Year award for their self-titled debut album. This comes on the back of their recent sold out national tour and with the news that the album has reached platinum status for sales in excess of 70,000 units locally.
Chuffed lead singer Andrew Stockdale said, "It's hard to think of music as competition. If anything, this is an acknowledgement from the institution of music that is Triple J. For us it's nice just to have that acknowledgment from a radio station that we have listened to for so long. It's something that you can never plan or expect."
Wolfmother beat out some hefty competition from the likes of Architecture In Helsinki, The Beautiful Girls, Ben Lee, Bernard Fanning, Clare Bowditch, Cog, and Downsyde, amongst others.
With plans to release the album internationally and tour overseas in the New Year, Wolfmother are set to play a handful of dates before they head off. For Festival goers, the band will be appearing at Meredith, The Falls and on the National Big Day Out circuit.
Marc Scully is currently recording for Casa Del Discos Recordings under the Omegaman moniker with a new album due out soon.
