MIDEM Director Leguern Honoured By France
MIDEM '06 News
MIDEM Director Dominique Leguern was named 'Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres' ('Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters') by French Minister of Culture Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres.
The French cultural award is given in recognition of outstanding achievements in the arts. The Minister of Culture made the presentation in Cannes, France, where the 40th edition of MIDEM, the world's music market, is currently taking place.
During the ceremony's opening speech in which Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres paid tribute to Dominique Leguern he said, "You lead MIDEM with passion and enthusiasm and after serving the music business for thirty years, continue to be at the epicentre of the industry's new challenges, to which you invite us all to bring creative responses."
"I am extremely happy to have been chosen for this honour, which I am proud to accept for myself and on behalf of all the hard-working MIDEM team," said Dominique Leguern.
"Dominique's commitment and passion for the music industry is exceptional," noted Reed MIDEM Chief Executive Officer Paul Zilk. "This recognition of her career makes MIDEM 2006 truly special for all of us."
Dominique Leguern joined EMI France in 1975 as press officer, successfully promoting a string of major bands, including Pink Floyd. When respected French music executive Philippe Constantin left EMI to set up Clouseau Music Publishing in 1979, Dominique Leguern went with him. The pair were instrumental in promoting what is now known as "world music."
In 1980 she joined Virgin France, the first subsidiary of Richard Branson's independent Virgin Records label to be set up outside the UK, where she successively held the posts of promotions manager, marketing manager and finally Virgin Records France general manager. Her interest in music led Dominique Leguern to produce music television programmes for France's cult '80s show "Les Enfants du Rock" and as a music programme producer at private French network M6.
In 1998, she was appointed MIDEM artistic director before being named MIDEM director in 2000.
