The third edition of the MIDEM Classical Awards, which took place at the world's largest music market in Cannes, awarded prizes to twelve CDs and three DVDs recorded in 2006 from thirteen international labels.

During the award ceremony the outstanding careers of three leading figures of the international music scene were also recognized and received special distinctions; the internationally renowned French composer Henri Dutilleux was honored with a "Lifetime Achievement Award," Manfred Eicher, famous for his jazz catalogue and founder of the independent label ECM was nominated "Label of the Year," and German pianist and conductor Christian Zacharias was named "Artist of the Year."

The gala evening, which took place in the Debussy Theatre in the Palais des Festivals, was enlightened by the performances of some of the most renowned international soloists accompanied by the Luxembourg Orchestra and conducted by Jack Martin Hndler. Highlights of the ceremony included the interpretations of Vivaldi's aeras by the French soprano Sandrine Piau and the Canadian mezzo- soprano Marie-Nicole Lemieux. The tale, Ferdinand le petit taureau, was magnificently interpreted by Marie-Christine Barrault and Philippe Graffin.

French violinist Olivier Charlier paid a moving tribute to Maestro, Henri Dutilleux by interpreting an extract of the Concerto, Sur le mme accord. A number of young international soloists also performed during the gala, including the phenomenal twelve-year-old Russian pianist Julia Vanyushina, the brilliant Ukrainian soprano Sofia Soloviy and the Austrian virtuoso percussionist Martin Grubinger.

English soprano Elizabeth Watts was nominated "Artist of the Year" in association with the International Artist Managers' Association (IAMA) and a special "Jury Nomination" was given to Klenke Quartett.
