Event Review: Carolyn Wonderland @ Threadgill’s
Austin Tx, April 22, 2007
Artist: Carolyn Wonderland
Event: Carolyn Wonderland @ Threadgill’s
Place: Austin, TX
Date: April 22, 2007
Despite her being stricken with a fever, local gal Carolyn Wonderland took full advantage of an opening set for visiting guitar master Johnny A, cutting through a misty drizzle with fierce soul and an variety of sounds that ranged from jump swing to Latin to down-home countrified Rock.
Ripping it open with the face-torquing bellows of “Nobody’s Fault but Mine,” Wonderland later offered a twangy telemarketer tribute called “I’m the Man,” an appropriately buzzy cover of Billy Joe Shaver’s “Honeybee,” and the hopeful Blues “Come Together” that she co-wrote with Ruthie Foster.
Supported by the gritty guitar of Scott Daniels, the two-fisted keys of Cole Eli-Saleh and the tight and subtly syncopated skin work of Danny “Lefty” Lefkowitz, the emotive Wonderland moved from tickly Telecaster work and bomb-dropping lap steel to impressive whistling solos and both impersonated and real horn work that spiced up a “butt-shakin’” version of Los Lobos’ “Cumbia.”
Flying from instrument to instrument and genre to genre, the feverish singer/songwriter kept up her fever pitch all the way through a solo-washed jam on “Judgment Day Blues” that let everyone in the band show their stuff and gave Wonderland time to catch her breath before her impassioned final screams.
