Event Review: WXRV Presents Kim Taylor at The Paradise

Event: WXRV Presents Kim Taylor at The Paradise, Boston – May 8, 2007
Sneaking on stage to building applause, Cincinnati singer/songwriter Kim Taylor launched into the first of many firm strummings for the title track of her latest album, I Feel Like a Fading Light, as Jimi Zhivago added wet steel slides on the side of the stage.
As her warm, husky voice bounced between her lips and the mike, lyrics became mumbly, support instruments for this stripped-down set. But as the nervous bounce of the opening song resolved into the smoother, gospelly blues and soulful barks of “Chocolate Jesus” (which also featured Zhivago’s echoey Strat shimmers), Taylor’s references shifted from the realm of Brickell to the world of Waits.
While “Who is Golden” offered chorus-heavy chunks of lyrical pondering, “If I am Wrong” was a new example of more exploratory verse. “Cadillac Flowers” returned to Taylor’s familiar recipe of gentle mumbles and hard strums, but the new closer “The Greatest Story” toned down the guitar to let her vocals and musical thoughts emerge from what was on the whole a promising performance by an up-and-coming talent.
