Jump, Jive, & Harmonize: Rock Mania Issue One
Title: Rock Mania
Genre: Glam/Pop/PowerPop Music Magazine
Publisher: Rock Mania
Details: 1st Edition
You would be forgiven to think Rock Mania is an older magazine, one published circa the late seventies and early eighties. Not only do the nice, neat and colorful graphics mirror eternally memorable reads such as “Who Put the Bomp” and “Trouser Press,” but the sounds covered within the pages also dip back to the heyday of power pop and new wave music.
Among some of the treats featured in Rock Mania are interviews with Justin Love, Nikki Corvette, The Wind, The Cold and Milk and Cookies. As well, there's observations on videos such as "Cotton Candy," Rockpile's "Born Fighters" and "Just For The Hell of It," the latter, which revolves around a sick and twisted group of kids who have nothing better to do than dump fish bowls on each other's heads, swipe canes and crutches from blind people, and toss babies into trash cans. And if that isn't enough to spark your curiosity, reams of cool book and record reviews are further included.
Discs by Chris Stamey, Ray Paul, The Outlets, The Radio Alarm Clocks, Shoes, Fool's Face, The Dawgs, The Suspicions, The Marshalls and The Shakers are all but a quick roll call of the grooves slipped under the microscope. Pretty obscure stuff indeed. A stunning debut issue, Rock Mania is a picture perfect reflection of the artists it salutes. The writing is witty and enthusiastic on every level.
