The Media in Transition conference presents Prof. Karlheinz Brandenburg, the inventor and driving force behind some of today's most innovative digital audio technology, notably the audio compression format MPEG Audio Layer 3, more commonly known as MP3. These methods form the basis of today's leading audio/video compression and distribution technologies.
In 1989 he obtained his Ph.D. from the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg in Electrical Engineering for his work on digital audio coding and perceptual measurement techniques. The research results of his dissertation were the basis of MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3), MPEG-2 Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) and most other modern audio compression schemes. After 1990 he accomplished further research within the field of audio coding at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and later on at the Fraunhofer Institute in Erlangen.
Karlheinz Brandenburg is the director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT in Ilmenau and professor at the Institute for Media Technology at Ilmenau Technical University, pioneering research in the field of media technology. Audio/ video codecs and compression, meta-data integration, multimedia authoring suites, 3D worlds, surround sound systems are all technologies with high potential for health-care, automotive, aeronautical and entertainment industries. Although Anglo-Saxon countries are taking the lead in information and communication technologies, Brandenburg is confident of the innovation capabilities of Germany. The Fraunhofer-Institute is such a leading example. A top ranked research and development organization and think tank, it shows how to create and market innovations in media technology.
