Universal Music Group Promotes Matthew Gerson To Executive Vice President For Public Policy & Government Relations
Universal Music Group (UMG), the world's leading music company, announced the promotion of Matthew Gerson to executive vice president for public policy and Government Affairs, effective immediately. Mr. Gerson will continue to be based in Washington, D.C. and report to Zach Horowitz, president and chief operating officer of the company.
In this role, Mr. Gerson will oversee all public policy issues relating to UMG's businesses. He will continue to direct the company's interaction with the U.S. Congress and the Administration and coordinate the company's work with entertainment industry trade associations.
"Matt has spent almost 20 years in Washington as an outstanding advocate for the entertainment industry," stated Mr. Horowitz. "We are indeed fortunate to have his leadership and experience guiding our public policy initiatives. Matt has great credibility and his bipartisan approach has been invaluable to our public advocacy, and more importantly, to our business. We are delighted to recognize all of his accomplishments with this well-deserved promotion."
Recently, Mr. Gerson was named a 'Washingtonian of the Year' for 2007 by Washingtonian Magazine. The honor was in recognition of his volunteer efforts on behalf of pediatric cancer patients.
Mr. Gerson joined Universal as vice president of entertainment public policy for Joseph E. Seagram & Sons, Inc., a U.S. subsidiary of The Seagram Company Ltd., prior owner of Universal Studios, Inc. Formerly, he served as vice president of congressional affairs at the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). His background also includes serving as an attorney with the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, specializing in public policy issues relating to copyright, communications and technology.
Mr. Gerson received a B.A. from Tufts University in Medford, Mass., in 1980 and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., in 1984.
