NY ASCAP Songwriter Profile: Steven Lynch
I'm interested in a new business model for unsigned artists
Songwriter/Artist: Steven Lynch
Why did you decide to attend ASCAP NY Sessions?
I am about to release my second LP, "Thunder And Sun," as an independent artist I didn't want to leave any stones unturned. I thought there might be something to glean from the topics presented, especially with regards to online radio. I'm interested in a new business model for unsigned artists, the ASCAP NY Sessions helped me to understand what the head space of major labels are, and how smaller companies are being entrepreneurial in an ever changing industry.
What was the most important thing you took away from the one-day conference?
On the practical side I learned about Sound Exchange which was the most significant thing I did not know about. I'm glad I attended for that single reason before releasing my album. I also had very engaging and helpful conversations with fellow attendees and panelists.
What is the biggest benefit of being an ASCAP member?
I'm still learning about and building my relationship with ASCAP, but it seems to be a very supportive, encouraging, and nurturing organization that performs nothing short of magic.
What major projects or ambitions do you have lined-up for 2009?
The release of Thunder And Sun, my first full production album as a producer/arranger as well as performer/writer and the shooting of a music video is the next big thing for me in 2009, the other goal is for the music to resonate with people in a way that connects an audience not by genre but by the spirit and authenticity of the work, it's the way I approach art and music, it's got to go beyond.
