Digital Music NY is proud to present its next session "Breaking Into International Markets - from China to MIDEM" with three very special speakers. Digital Music NY host and MusicDish*China founder Eric de Fontenay will open the discussion with Mathew Daniel Vice President at R2G, which developed the first centralized music distribution platform in China promoting the consumption and monetization of legitimate digital content - will be discussing the emerging music industry in China and how US artists and labels can position themselves to break into the world's largest music market.
Eric and Mathew will then be joined by Steven Masur, a Senior Partner of MasurLaw who has over 15 years of experience working with digital media and entertainment companies on their corporate and intellectual property transactions and day-to-day operations.
JP Bommel, VP of Business Development for North America at REED MIDEM, will be discussing the upcoming MIDEM 2011 being held in January. MIDEM is the world's largest music industry trade fair, which has been held annually at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France, since 1967. Bringing together musicians, businesspeople, cultural policy makers, and journalists from many countries, it provides a forum for business talks, discussing political and legal issues, and showcasing new artists, musical trends and music-related products.
Mathew is a 15-year veteran of the advertising industry and made the transition to the online space in the early days of the dot com boom with the then leading web developer Organic after which he went on to lead the interactive and strategic planning disciplines for Y&R Wunderman in Hong Kong and China. His combined interests in new media technology and digital music platforms then led him to be part of a pioneering group at R2G.
At R2G he plays a key role in shaping business models for the monetization of mobile and full-length music, and also in the acquisition of content. He brings to market the skills to bridge the huge divide in Western and Chinese approaches to intellectual property whilst balancing it with the practicalities of customer relevance.
Steve founded MasurLaw in 1994 to focus his practice on the tectonic shifts in law and business caused by emerging internet technologies. Steveís counsel helped some of the earliest digital entertainment and internet companies get organized, financed and ready for successful exits, whether through M&A, IPO, or just ongoing business success. Fascinated with the new business models being developed by these companies, Steve created the contracts that made them run, and worked out the legal problems holding them back. Steve has stuck with this passion, and it has led him on the forefront of each successive wave of technology in the media business, including internet delivery, mobile content, games, Web 2.0, and now their convergence in mobile apps.
Steve has also taken the lead in many initiatives aimed at helping the law adapt to new technology as it develops. Steve chairs the New York Barís Technology and Venture Law Committee and has served on a variety of trade and industry association boards, such as the International Association of Entertainment Lawyers, the Industrial and Technology Assistance Corporation and the New York Tech Meetup.
