Gee Roberson Appointed Chairman of Geffen Records
Interscope Geffen A&M Chairman Jimmy Iovine announced that renowned artist manager, creative executive and pioneering entrepreneur Gee Roberson has been appointed Chairman of Geffen Records.
Based in New York, Mr. Roberson will oversee the creative direction and operations of Geffen Records, with a special focus on discovering and nurturing new artists while expanding the reach of the label into numerous areas such as digital direct-to-consumer, merchandising, touring and management.
Mr. Roberson began his tenure in the music industry under the tutelage of Jay-Z at Roc-A-Fella Records, where he quickly rose to Senior Vice President of A&R. While at Roc-A-Fella, he was instrumental in such multi-platinum successes as Jay-Z's In My Lifetime, Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Hard Knock Life, Vol. 3... Life and Times of S. Carter, The Dynasty: Roc la Familia, and The Blueprint(2): The Gift & The Curse; DJ Clue's The Professional and The Professional 2; and Cam'ron's Come Home With Me; as well as the soundtracks to Backstage (Roc-A-Films/Dimension), State Property (Dimension/ Miramax), Streets Is Watching (Roc-A-Films) and Paper Soldiers (Universal Pictures), all of which sold in excess of 25 million units. He later segued to Atlantic Records, where he served as Senior Vice President of A&R, heading up the famed label's urban music division. While there, he was instrumental in the break-through success of T.I., among others. Mr. Roberson serves as Co-CEO of HipHop Since 1978, a full service management company that features such chart-topping trendsetters as Kanye West, Lil' Wayne, Drake, Nicki Minaj and Young Jeezy.
ASCAP Promotes Marc Emert-Hutner To Senior Director, Membership - Pop/Rock
Sue Drew, Vice President, Membership - Pop/Rock of ASCAP announced that Marc Emert-Hutner has been promoted to Senior Director, Membership - Pop/Rock. Based in ASCAP's New York office, Emert-Hutner is responsible for the recruitment and maintenance of writers, in addition to providing support for ASCAP's wide array of artist development programs. Emert-Hutner, who joined ASCAP in 2005, was most recently Director of Membership - Pop/Rock and Film & TV Music.
Commenting on Emert-Hutner's promotion, Drew said: "Marc has demonstrated great talent and enthusiasm in signing and developing writers as well as making contacts within the industry. He has become an integral force on the team and it is a privilege to work with him."
Merlin's Influence Consolidated by New US Board & Members
Global rights agency Merlin has voted four new US members to its board in a recent member election. The appointments, from some of the leading US independents, are:
* Dave Hansen, General Manager, Epitaph (Weezer, New Found Glory)
* William Crowley, VP Digital & Mobile, E1 Entertainment (formerly Koch) (Moby, Joan Osborne, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones)
* Kris Gillespie, General Manager, Domino USA (Arctic Monkeys, Animal Collective, Franz Ferdinand)
* Glenn Dicker, Co-owner, Yep Roc Records (Nick Lowe, Liam Finn) / Redeye Distribution (Acony, Daptone, Alive, Warp, Barsuk)
The four new board members join longstanding members Tom Silverman, founder of Tommy Boy Records and Bob Frank, President of syndication network Qello (former President of E1) on the US board, both of whom were re-elected in the recent ballot. The first meeting of the new board takes place today, Monday 20th June, in New York.
The election comes after a period of strong membership growth which has seen significant US labels including Merge Records (Arcade Fire, Spoon, She & Him), Sup Pop (Fleet Foxes), Naxos of America, Secretly CanadianDistribution, Jagjaguwar (Bon Iver), Thrill Jockey, Latin Cool Records, Righteous Babe and Music Media Mexico join the likes of Beggars/Matador, Saddlecreek, Victory and distributors Redeye/Yeproc, Virtual Label and United for Opportunity as Merlin members. Merlin's global membership now includes over 14,000 of the world's most prominent independents.
The board is split equally across Merlin's three operational territories - with five each from North America, Europe, rest of the world - to ensure the company fully represents the varied geographical needs of the sector.
SESAC Promotes James Leach to Vice President, Writer/Publisher Relations, West Coast Operations
Performing rights organization SESAC announced the promotion of James Leach to Vice President, Writer/Publisher Relation, West Coast Operations. Formerly Associate Vice President, Writer/Publisher Relations & New Technologies, Leach has been with SESAC for ten years and will now be responsible for SESAC's Los Angeles office operations. Leach will also continue to recruit writers and publishers for SESAC as well as facilitate catalog affiliations.
Leach began his music career at Famous Music Publishing before landing with ATV Music Group where he was eventually named Director of Creative Affairs. Upon leaving ATV, Leach formed Leach Entertainment Enterprises where he consulted for several indie labels and placed music recording projects in various film/television projects. Leach rejoined Famous Music Publishing and was responsible for signing current million-selling artist/producer AKON and also served as Music Consultant/Coordinator for the groundbreaking TV show, "New York Undercover" as well as serving as a Music Supervisor for Fox Television before joining SESAC in 2001.
MakeMusic, Inc. Appoints Karen van Lith as Chief Executive Officer
MakeMusic, Inc. announced its board of directors has appointed Karen van Lith (formerly Karen Beckwith) as president, chief executive officer and director, effective June 13, 2011. Van Lith replaces interim CEO, Jeff Koch, who will remain on the board of directors.
Robert Morrison, chairman of the board of MakeMusic, stated, "We are very excited to welcome someone of Karen van Lith's caliber to the MakeMusic management team. Karen has an exceptional record of transforming companies through conversions to new technology platforms and growth acceleration. Royalty Network And Krian Music Group Executive Announcements
Independent publishing company The Royalty Network and it's new label partner Krian Music Group announced the hiring of music executive Frank Blasucci and the promotion of Royalty Network's Lawson Higgins.
Frank Blasucci will head up The Royalty Network's new independent label Krian Music Group as Label Manager for the company. Previously Frank was director of marketing, promotions and artist development for Green Street/Executive Music Group overseeing projects with artists including Beck, Crystal Method, David Bowie, Rob Zombie and more.
As Label Manager of Krian Music Group, Frank will oversee the execution of each of their artist's projects, managing all aspects of the rosters' album releases including the marketing, PR and distribution needs.
Lawson Higgins will now head up the creative team for The Royalty Network as Senior Creative/A&R for the publishing group and label. He will be responsible for signing new clients, reviewing new creative material and overseeing all collaborations, partnerships and strategic creative development opportunities for the publishing company. Previously Lawson was Sr. Administrator/Creative.
