4th Annual Chinese Midi Rock Awards
This year, the selection committee in charge of nominations for China's Midi Rock Awards includes 119 industry insiders
The 4th Annual Chinese Midi Rock Awards is in the works, set to go down on December 16th in Beijing at M Space. The Chinese Midi Rock Awards are a ceremony held in cooperation with Beijing's Midi Music School, as well as numerous Chinese musical and cultural figures who have developed the ceremony as a way to annually judge the music that comes out of China, and select the most outstanding.
The Midi Awards nomination process is already underway: the judge criteria includes, but is not limited to this year's performances, albums, contribution to society/public service, and degree of recognition and exposure among their rockers, among other various aspects, all of which will be equally considered. Artists who released work in China between October 1st of 2011 and October 1st 2012 will be considered. There are already 82 records which have gone through the selection panel. The 119 panel members have submitted nominations, which are being reviewed by 9 members of the grand jury to see which ones will make it to the final selection.
China's Midi Rock Awards Bring the New "Special Award By Grand Jury"
This year, the selection committee in charge of nominations for China's Midi Rock Awards includes 119 industry insiders, all well-known music critics: record company and brand representatives, musicians, representatives from related organizations, and other well-qualified media workers, all of whom are bringing their experiences and skills from their own fields to promote the development of the Chinese music scene. The 9 members of the grand jury include: 戴方、郝舫、吕玻、李宏杰、李皖、沈黎晖、王迪、张帆、张有待. In addition to the 13 awards that have traditionally been given at Midi, the grand jury has added yet another special prize: the Special Award By Grand Jury, with a wide range of potential prizewinners, including the animate (industry figure, artist, or group) and inanimate (song, organization, or even music venue).
Over the past several years, the Midi Rock Awards have become an awards ceremony that all rock fans look forward to as the year comes to a close. This year's ceremony will be held in Beijing on December 16, and attendees will be entertained by both the awards section as well as live performances; attending bands will include familiar faces as well as up-and-comers.
Midi Judging Body
The full name of the organization that will make the final judgments is the "Midi Appraisal Committee". The committee will, over a long period, take a look at all sorts of music-related products coming out of China, like recordings, production, performances, music criticism, promotion, and so on. The committee will not defer decision-making to the highest ranking member, but instead will employ a round-table style conference to discuss and decide: members will make personal recommendations as to who should make up the committee, later, members can make recommendations for new exemplary candidates in order to constantly maintain the impartiality of the committee. The number of members in the committee will always remain at 119 people, and the committee will establish specialized staff responsible for day-to-day work and distribution of awards.
Breaking Down the Midi Trophy
China's Midi Rock Award's trophy is a copper-cast piece of art (which has already received a design patent); its shape, appearance, and dimensions are exactly the same as the traditional northern Chinese style, and the make of the trophy adopts the traditional LaMo craft. It is completely handmade, and has undergone minute revisions and possesses a simple, adorned, but refined bronze-work quality. On the bottom, in English, are the words "MIDI Awards". Inlaid at the very bottom on the inside is a stainless steel plate, on which the recipient's name will be engraved. Beijingers have given this lid the name "Ban Er Zhuan", so the Midi Award as been given the nickname the "Rock Ban Er Zhuan." The story behind Ban Er Zhuan is this: use Ban Er Zhuan to protect your rock spouse. For rock, build a love nest. At the same time, rock began to take shape over half a centruy ago in the west, and when we study western rock music culture's foundation, we must integrate Chinese tradition and culture into its essence; only then can we create a true cultural exchange through rock. That is why Midi utitlises such a traditional and classic element as the QingZhuan to award rock artists, as it possesses globe-spanning cultural significance.
Featured Performing Artists
Numerous domestic bands – old mainstays and new powerhouses, all – will be specially invited to the event to perform for attendees. Among these are realist folk balladeer Chuanzi (川子）； folk and world music guitarist Dongzi (冬子）；Pantera-like heavy metal rockers Ordnance（ 军械所）; Beijing punk-rockers Brain Failure; Nova Heart, who mix sex appeal and an agitated disco style; popular, British-rock-inspired Perdel; China's most well known nu-metal outfit Yaksa (夜叉）；and the most influential DJ in China, DJ YouDai (张有待). These 8 bands will bring an unprecedented element of energy to the event. The Midi Awards Festival is absolutely the most entertaining and exciting evening this Winter, so be sure not to miss out.
