Beijing's venerable livehouse Yugong Yishang brought together two veteran bands of the Chinese indie scene, Re-tros and Pet Conspiracy, for a great punk rock party on February 24th, in celebration of their successful European music tour late last year.

Re-tros were the first to take the stage. Inspired by 70s post-punk ancestors such as Gang of Four and Bauhaus, the three member band is one of the most talented in China today. Their music is a renewal of post punk that incorporates synthesizers and evocative melodies. The members are like three shadows in the dark - quiet and peaceful. However, when they appear on the stage, the crowds cannot hide their excitements while chanting their names.

Main vocalist and guitarist Dong Hua's voice invokes feelings of desperation and complication, while bass player Liu Min clear and high pitch vocal makes one feel reborn. Combined with Mai Hui at the back of the stage on drums, the Re-tro's show brings the audience on a mysterious voyage through their rock world.

If Re-tros brought us a mysterious rock world, then Pet conspiracy took us to a passionate punk world. Internationally defined as the "Asia's next big thing", they have quickly became an icon in Chinese electronic music industry. Composed of two Chinese (Yunyun/Huzi) and two Italian (Mary/Edo)members, they are best known of their over the top live acts, shocking visuals, massive scenographies, flamboyant theatrical affairs and french kisses. One of MusicDish*China's favorite bands in China, their power rock sound grabbed and held the crowds attention from their very first song.

The main vocalist Mary spent a good part of the set out in front of the stage, dancing around and interacting with the crowd that responded with screams and shouts throughout. People kept yelling "NiuBi," which literally translates to a cow's private part, but has became a popular catch phrase for the younger generation to mean cool and awesome. And while Yun Yun might appear tiny on stage, she displays her powerful voice while singing songs like "Always waiting on you" - a rock rendition of this famous Chinese song - with the crowd breaking out into a chorus as she ask them to join her.

This show is a great example of Beijing's over-the-top nightlife and the talented musicians that animate it. I am so glad I was there to witness the event.
