Taiwanese Diva Jolin Tsai Marches Onto The International Stage
Jolin Tsai's participation at MIDEM and recent concerts in London and Paris shows that she is reaching out well beyond Asia's shores
2013 has truly started as an international year for Jolin Tsai, aptly crowned Taiwanese Queen of Pop's, year. The Taiwanese singer, dancer, fashion icon, and entrepreneur lite the stage on fire with her energetic performance at the the "Taiwan Music Night" concert at the Trianon in Paris on January 30th. Jolin already has an impressive fanbase and career in China, Taiwan and other parts of Asia, but her participation at MIDEM and recent concerts in London and Paris shows that Jolin is reaching out well beyond Asia's shores.
Jolin's electric performance solidified her popularity in Europe. However, for the 32-year old, that was merely the beginning. At this year's Midem conferene, she was recently joined by French composer Jean-Michel Jarre to announce their collaboration on large-scale performances throughout Asia as part of his Oxygen project. Jolin commented, "I want to create something new. I want to explore a variety of music." She also expressed strong desire to break language barriers by working with other European artists.
Collaborating with the West is nothing new for Jolin. At the Midem seminar titled "French & Taiwan Superstars Paving The Way To Asia's Largest Music Market," she was joined by Iggy Strange-Dahl, founder of Swedish-based The Kennel, who wrote one of her latest hits 'Dr. Jolin'. "I have a lot of dance songs written by Western songwriters and composers who provide lots of variety for my own albums. It's been a fantastic experience."
Perhaps Jolin's career is the direct result of her incredible work ethics. In China and Taiwan, Jolin is unanimously hailed as the most hard-working artist in the industry. Fans are always awed by her drive ability to reinvent herself over and over again and completely exceed their expectations. Discovered when she was 18 at a singing contest, she did not completely devote herself to music until after her graduation. While Jolin humbly called her success a matter of "luck", she conceded that she loved "the feeling of focusing". Despite her illustrious career, she is still constantly searching for "new experiences and inspirations." "On stage, I want to be able to tell my audience and fans that I have being trying hard to make something that anybody can enjoy."
Jolin's diligence was reflected by her immediate success. Her beauty and talent drew critical and commercial success, with her debut album selling over 400,000 copies. As her career took off, her fame in the industry solidified. Perhaps one of the reasons Jolin continues to astound her fans is her insistance in staying true to herself. "When looking for material and songwriters, I just follow my feelings. I don't let [external] pressures stop me from doing what I like." As a consequence, Jolin has become an influential force in Asian fashion and pop culture as well as music.
