Borderless Shadows – An Experiment In Urban Electro
Howie Lee's latest EP, "Borderless Shadows", presents British-influenced electro that is smartly packaged with urban sound elements
Born in Beijing and based in London, electronic musician Howie Lee released his new EP "Borderless Shadows" through Trapdoor Records on January 29, 2014. This masterfully produced EP consists 5 tracks that are heavily influenced by dance music and UK Bass.
"Borderless Shadows" is an outcome of experimenting the mixture of sounds and rhythms. It explores the raw noises found in an urban environment, and then refines them into carefully structured beats and melodies. Howie Lee himself explained his source of creativity as follows:
"It is an experiment in discovering the very nature of field recordings, then reconstructing them into rhythmic music context. From field recordings of city soundscape, to the crackles of campfire, the sound texture is then extracted to establish the foundation of a purely emotional musical content".
This whole EP opens our eyes (or rather ears) to something which we probably haven't heard before as a combination. It has layers of lush strange elements, while the steady melody is smartly hidden underneath. In "Leaving Beesands" you hear glass shattering and rain-dropping percussions; Chinese musical elements in "YRMT" and "Fused Pagoda" can be easily identified; "Northern Hangbird" leans towards dance music with thriving percussions and vocals; whereas "The Cream Song" is more melody driven which leads to a relaxing vibe.
Before going to UK for music school, Howie Lee was an established electronic music producer and DJ in Beijing, taking the city's dance floor up to a new electronic era. After having been influenced by UK Bass, Howie Lee went to London College of Communication learning Sound Arts in 2011. "Borderless Shadows" is the mishmash of Howie Lee's traditional and contemporary, western yet oriental artistic visions. He is not a follower. He is a groundbreaker.
