Matzka Delivers Aboriginal Taiwanese Reggae Grooves At Canadian Music Week
Matzuka will showcase their unique sound on May 7 at The Cadillac Lounge (7pm) as well as the second floor of the legendary El Mocambo on May 8
Aboriginal Taiwanese rock-reggae band Matzka will be performing at the legendary El Mocambo during Canadian Music Fest as part of the "Hearing Taiwan" events, presented by the Taiwan Ministry of Culture Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development (BAMID). They will be joined by award nominated EDM-infused group RED and Modern Sino-Rock band io.
Matzuka will showcase their unique sound on May 7 at The Cadillac Lounge (7pm) as well as the second floor of the legendary El Mocambo, where the Rolling Stones made their North American debut, on March 8th (9pm). The band will also connect with the media at a press event being held at the Marriott Downtown Eaton Centre at the International Market Place on May 8th from 11 AM.
Formed in 2009, Matzka sing in their native Paiwan (排灣) language as well as Mandarin. The bandleader, after whom the band is named, explained how the Paiwan language was well suited to Caribbean rhythms. "I've tried many styles and I think [reggae] felt the most suitable," Matzka said. In their song "Ma Do Va Do," which earned a songwriting prize for best Aboriginal song, his rapid-fire "toasting" in the Paiwan language resembles the rap-like chanting heard in dancehall music.
MATZKA entered the 2009 Hohaiyan Rock Festival competition where they won the “Best Rock Band” award. Later that December, they opened for Guns N' Roses’ tour in Taiwan. In 2010, Matzka were invited to the Jisan Valley Rock Festival in Korea, after which they toured Panama, Paraguay and Peru. They signed a record deal with Arrival Music that year, culminating in their first album that debuted number one for selling 10,000 albums.
In June 2011, Matzka were nominated with the “Best Artist” and they also won the “Best Band” categories at the 2011 Golden Melody Awards. In August, they were invited to play at the Summer Sonic Festival in Japan, making them one of the first Taiwanese bands to stand on that celebrated stage.
