Laurens Tan 谭思考 'Empire Bookends', May 17 GtB Eco-Art Series at the Today Art Museum
After an intense 6 years of living and working as artist in Beijing, contemporary artist Laurens Tan moved his studio to Las Vegas, essentially to further his design research in urban change.
An emergent theme in Tan's works have to do with our eco-footprint and a reflection of travel. He focuses on urban centers with a rich heritage of wisdom through language (ie - Mandarin in China and Ottoman Script, Turkey). His current series about eco-design and global blending in urban changes.
Beijing is the traditionally cultured and creative international hub, whereas Las Vegas is seen as playground and as entertainment capital of the world. It is the contrast between the two centers that stimulates his interest in the study of global cultural patterns.
