Over 90% Of Adults Support The Provision Of Music In Schools

The recent survey undertaken by industry charity, Music for All (MfA) proves conclusively that not only are more people than ever playing musical instruments, but more would like to learn.
The MfA survey "Making Music in the UK survey April 2014" shows that 28% of the UK population now plays a musical instrument compared to 21% in 2005! As importantly the number who have never played and would like to learn has risen dramatically to 14.6 million people. The number of lapsed players who would like to return to playing essentially remained the same, however a remarkable 58% of these were found to be women. The results of the MfA survey clearly identifies retail MI opportunities are growing and indicates specific markets that could be targeted.
One of the reasons put forward for the huge increases seen above is the wider access to musical instrument lessons on the internet via YouTube and other social media. Many people find these free tools pique their interest, get them started and prompt them to move onto face to face lessons in music schools or with individual teachers.
The internet is also having a marked effect on how people buy their musical instruments, according to the MfA survey. Back in 2005 the survey clearly suggested that ‘bricks and mortar’ specialists were preferred (65%) when making an instrument purchase. However the latest survey reveals there is a move toward the Internet, particularly for established players, with internet purchases now equaling those from the more traditional retailer outlet. This will not be a surprise to the industry, however the upward trend shows there is still a huge opportunity to capitalise on internet retail.
The MfA survey shows, once again, the importance people place on the provision of music lessons and opportunities in schools. Over 90% of respondents believed it was ‘very or quite important’ that the Government continues to financially support this. It is clear they recognise the countless benefits music brings to a child’s creativity, intellectual development and social skills such as listening and teamwork. This supports the Protect Music Education campaign led by the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM), which revealed that 85% of the British public want to protect music education.
The full fifty-page MfA survey contains a wealth of vital statistics on the current music industry trends, demographics, instrument preferences, values/preferences and retail developments. This is the only survey of its kind in the UK and is available to purchase from the MIA for £100 to MIA members and £200 for non-members.
