Step 1: What does ATRAC3 stand for? Adaptive Transform Acoustic Coding 3 (ATRAC3).
Step 2: What was its predecessor? ATRAC3 is an improved version of the ATRAC encoding scheme used by MiniDisc players.
Step 3: How does it compare to MP3? It achieves nearly the same level of compression and sound quality as MP3.
Step 4: What is the support for ATRAC3 Currently, Sony's portable music players, like the VAIO Music Clip, use the ATRAC3. You can see a demo at www.ita.sel.sony.com/jump/musicclip/.
Step 5: Is it a secure format? Yes. In addition, ATRAC3 will be compliant with the standards of the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI), made up of representatives from the music, software and electronics industries.
