What can you say about a seventy-seven year old drummer that's still rockin' to this day? Is he unique? He is all of that and more, to be sure. In a world of young and vibrant musicians vying for a position in your stereo system and your hearts, this incredible musician has carved his own place in the history of music. Others can only hope that they do.

Chances are if you look up the group Spirit you will find quite an impressive discography filled with rock n' roll that has been revered as progressive classic-rock with a distinct sound all it's own.

Ed Cassidy started playing the professional circuit back in 1937. He was in his early forties when he made the transition to rock music. That fact alone makes him one who stands alone in the annals of rock music history.

This one-hour video gives you bits and pieces of Cassidy's career with Spirit from the sixties to the eighties. There is commentary by the man himself throughout this video. He explains how it all began for him, with several different segments highlighting his long and successful career to present day.

There is one clip of a jam session with Dickey Betts that is absolutely magical. Anyone who knows anything about guitar players knows who Betts is (Allman Brothers), and what a great player he has been throughout the years. Randy California (guitar and lead vocals, Spirit) plays off of Bett's commanding and recognizable lead strokes beautifully. The only exception is that the session is cut short and it moves on to another segment. It was such a wonderful thing to watch, regardless of the length. It was just so darned good, I didn't want it to end.

Another notch to a fascinating career is Cass's appearance in a Sci-Fi flick created by a group of Southern California college students for there thesis. Ed is the star of the film "Effects Unknown." You get a glimpse of that ambitious project on this video.

Ed is currently working on three books. One volume is the story of his career (the other in an audio form), and the other is about maintaining fitness and health. One look at Cass shows that he is qualified to write a book on this subject. He easily looks twenty years younger than he actually is.

It's not an easy task encapsulating a career that spans more than sixty years (1937-Present). Imagine being in a time machine and playing drums with big bands during their heyday? Then playing psychedelic rock music in the sixties? How many people have done that? I can't think of one, besides Ed. The man has been living large for a mighty long time. His contributions to music and people in the music community is beyond what words can express.

This is an hour that will be enjoyed by all that have any interest in music. This is a fascinating man, Ed Cassidy. I can hardly wait to read his book, I know it will be one of the most interesting life stories ever written. In the meantime you should seriously consider picking up this video to see some of what this traveling soul has accomplished on this earth thus far.
