Radio - Like the 'Old Grey Mare,' She Ain't What She Used to Be
Many folks in today's world (including "Gen-x-ers" as well as "boomers") grew up in a different world, when it comes to radio. Over the last 20 to 30 years, artists and fans alike have complained that radio content was "spoon fed"... that corruption ran rampant in the business... and that it was (basically) pretty boring. Things have CHANGED, people!
"What is he talking about?," you ask. Radio is still radio, isn't it? You tool down the road in your "pink Cadillac," or whatever your fantasy ride is, light up your stogie, then flip on the dial & (still) listen to tons of commercials, tired DJ's and the same old music, right? While it's true that the old-style programming is still out there, the advent of MP3 players and downloadable, extensively tailored content makes it entirely possible that the future will make EVERYONE their own DJ. If you stop and think about it, the possibilities are (really) unlimited!
Listeners and independent artists alike will be excited as they learn more about new alternatives such as ClickRadio, who were recently awarded (yet another) "Interactive Radio License" from Ole Productions. They already have partnerships & licenses from Alligator Records, BMG Entertainment and many other labels, including independents like ATO Records (co-founded by Dave Matthews). The concept is that this is not "just Internet radio." They offer content for offline listening, with listeners customizing the content by clicking Thumbs Up (I want to hear this song more often), Thumbs Down (I'd like to hear this song less) or Skip (I'm not in the mood).
David Benjamin, Vice Chairman and Co-Founder of ClickRadio highlighted the difference between traditional/Internet radio when he said, "ClickRadio delivers its unique music programming to listeners for use offline, a completely different approach than Internet radio or traditional radio."
Independent artists (especially those who have exciting music/content to offer) will be especially excited to hear what John Alagia, founder of OlZ Productions had to say in the press release - "ClickRadio gives listeners the opportunity to catch the early wave of promising indie bands. We hope to deliver emerging artists to a mainstream audience." Imagine it... content that the listener can tailor completely, carrying it with them wherever they go - and THEY (the listeners) will dictate what gets listened to!
If you aren't particularly in to the music scene, but love spoken word, you'll want to investigate the new internet radio syndication partnership between MediaBay, ArtistEnt and Patronet. They announced in August that they will embed The ArtistEnt produced Internet radio program, "Vin Scelsa's Live at Lunch," in the Events section of MediaBay's website. Legendary disk jockey Vin Scelsa's signature brand of free-form radio programming offers a wide variety of musical genres, intelligent talk and an eclectic array of guests, all woven into the kind of distinctly creative show that Scelsa has become famous for throughout his storied 30-year career in radio. You see? What YOU want to listen to... not what someone else force-feeds you!
Another development that changes the way radio is perceived was announced on 18 September 2000 by nTunes.com (an nSyndicate company). In partnership with streaming solutions provider WebRadio.com, they will integrate "instant buy" technology in to their radio station affiliates. Randy Choplin, President and CEO of nTunes.com noted that "for listeners, it means they'll be able to buy music where they hear it -- from a content rich music and movie store tied to their favorite radio station." How many times have you been listening to a traditional station & wished you knew WHERE to get that tune? This partnership, when combined with offline content alternatives like the one announced by ClickRadio will mean that you can always go back & purchase the material you were particularly interested in.
Yes, it IS a "brave new world", but not quite what Aldous Huxley had in mind when he wrote the novel by the same title. Personalized content that you can play anywhere & anytime, options to mix and match your shows the way you want to (audio, spoken word and commentary, for instance) - even the opportunity to purchase it while you're listening to it online. That "old grey mare" begins to sound better and better every day!
