*Lee Joseph of Dionysus Records/Bacchus Archives was kind enough to give me a review of some of his upcoming January and February releases. Some of these have been previously announced, while others are new to the Dionysus slate: 'East Side Sound, Volume II' featuring, among others, the Casinos and Impalas; a 12-song compilation of Sonny Flaharty & Mark V, which will include 'Hey Conductor,' and span the years '63-'68; a 12-song compilation, all recorded in '65, by HT3, which will include 'Cool Breeze'; two more volumes of Tony the Tyger's excellent 'Fuzz, Flaykes, & Shakes' series (Topsy Turvy and the Bram Rigg Set will be featured artists); a Legend City Volume I (from Phoenix) comp; the Avengers VI 'Good Humor' surf album; and a 45 by Rock Garden. All will be released on CD/LP, with the exception of the HT3 release (CD only) and Rock Garden single.

*As reported last month, Ace/Big Beat Records will be releasing the much anticipated Nightcrawlers retrospective in November. The compilation will be "the first official reissue of the band's recorded legacy, including their legendary Kapp LP and associated singles for the Lee, Marlin and Scott labels . . . This disc features the complete recordings by the original five man NightCrawlers, including their super-rare debut 45 'Cry,' little know singles-only sides like 'If I Were You,' and a host of previously unreleased goodies, from the heartbreaking gems 'Last Ship' and 'Sally in The Alley' to a full complement of rocking covers from the band's stage set. The compilation is rounded out with an in-depth sleeve note, featuring contributions form all the original band and many previously unseen photographs from their archive. Having regained control of their 1960's masters, the NightCrawlers have waited until the time (and label) was right to allow a reissue. And Big Beat's Little Black Egg package does 'em proud." And--IF THAT AIN'T ENOUGH--Big Beat has also announced "Northwest Battle of The Bands, Volume One," available in January 2001! According to Big Beat, "This is the first of five (count 'em!) Northwest Battle of The Bands compilations forthcoming on Ace/Big Beat over the next twelve months, all dedicated to the magical punk sound of the Pacific Northwest in the years 1964 to 1967. A veritable Jerden Records box set!" Highlights include "The outstanding lead geetar on 'Tomorrow's Gonna Be Another Day' wailing for a full 60 seconds past the original 45's fade; Rip-roaring demos from the Rock-N-Souls, Heirs and Emergency Exit; An amazing unissued fuzz-pounder from the Express, whilst the Brave New World deliver the most bone-chilling take on Arthurly's OD classic ever; Gordon Kjellberg IS Van Morrison on the Liberty Party's "Goodbye," whilst Zombie maniacs the Live Five never sounded better; and Pounders like 'Louise' and 'Trick Bag' are gonna shred your speakers!" Also, promised is 'Riot City: Rockin' NW Instrumentals,' "a feast of stomping guitar, wailing sax, hard on the Hammond workouts from the early to mid-1960s. Many ultra-cool instros that few have heard plus of course tons of unissued."

*MGM's Midnite Movies Series has recently released the 1965 trash classic, "Village of the Giants" to VHS. The film features teenagers, giant ducks, Beau Bridges, and the Beau Brummels! The Brummels perform two songs, "Woman" and "When It Comes to Your Love." There has also been a slew of the early to mid sixties beach movies re released to video or DVD recently. Titles include "Beach Party," "Beach Blanket Bingo," "Pajama Party," "Bikini Beach," and "Muscle Beach Party." Each film includes appearances by '60s surf or pop/garage acts. "How to Commit Marriage," featuring an appearance by the Comfortable Chair, also made its DVD premiere late October. Finally, MPI Home Video has released several 'Hullabaloo' shows to DVD. I believe the DVD is a reissue of the VHS volumes from a few years back. Bands featured include the Sir Douglas Quintet, the Strangeloves, and the Cyrkle. MPI also reissued its "Best of Music Scene" VHS volumes to DVD.

*On September 30, Cavestomp! conducted what it promises will be an annual on-line chat with garage bands old and new. Invited guests included the Blues Magoos, Sky Saxon (Seeds), the Chocolate Watchband, ? & The Mysterians, The Monks, The Standells, Richard & The Young Lions, Barry Tashain (Remains), Sean Bonniwell (Music Machine), Reg Presley (Troggs), The Electric Prunes, Syndicate of Sound, the Gants, and more (unannounced)! Newer bands invited included The Hatebombs, Fleshtones, and Mooney Suzuki. In other Cavestomp! news, the Beau Brummels were a late addition to perform at the actual festacular on November 5. What a line-up!

*As mentioned in last month's column, the Roky Erickson/Thirteenth Floor Elevators Community is releasing CDRs of rare recordings and concerts by Roky and the band. For more information, and a listing of titles, visit -

*PCR Records has a series of promo CD volumes ready entitled "The Beat Era." These compilation discs will cover different countries, but the series is misleadingly titled, as the USA volumes are more of an extension of "Nuggets" or "Pebbles" type garage sounds than "beat." Many of the songs are previously comped, and the series seems to draw heavily on Sundazed and Big Beat releases. It's strange to see a series release "Mr. Tambourine Man" by the Byrds, or "Somebody to Love" by the Jefferson Airplane, alongside "U.F.O" by Dudley & The Doo Rytes and "Make the Music Pretty" by the Sidewalk Sounds. To view the track listings, visit -

*Italy's Misty Lane Records has announced the following new releases: "Badger Beat a Go-Go," - 20 Wisconsin Garage Greats '65/'68 LP; "Bring Flowers to U.S.," - 16 Long gone U.S. Flower-popsike gems LP; and The Gallows, "Come to The Party" - Great U.S. Midwest '66 folk-punk garagers. For more information, email -

*Sundazed's newest batch of must-have's includes releases by Paul Revere and the Raiders (a 2-CD set, with one disc being comprised entirely of a live-in-the-studio concert from September 1964); 'The Original Northwest Sound of Don and The Goodtimes,' on 180 gram BeatRocket vinyl; and "Northwest Battle of The Bands Volume 1: Flash and Crash," on both a BeatRocket CD/LP). It will be interesting to compare this release with Big Beat's upcoming compilation. Also, scheduled is a BeatRocket CD/LP by Butch Engle and The Styx. This one was announced months ago, so it will be great to finally have it available.

*WEB SITE WATCH (sites that have either been sent to me, or that I've stumbled upon while "Surfin' The Net Santa Fe Style") Though this is primarily a site for the reformed version of the band, the original group created some fine pop songs in the '60s. There is a new CD, but I don't believe it contains any vintage material. Check the band out in the '69 Don Knotts flick, "The Love God"; - Not to be confused with, the great fan site by web master Haydn Jones, this new site--still under construction--will be maintained by original band members, and offer news on the band's latest CDs, DVDs, music, and film scores; From Kim Cooper of "Scram Magazine" comes this very interesting site devoted to a friend's father's '60s teen band: - Great garage name: Quack & The Pneumatic Ducks! I'd love to see more pages like this -- if you got 'em, please send 'em to me! Kim also informed me that the URL for the upcoming Bubblegum Book (definite title: Bubblegum Music is the Naked Truth) has been changed to - Check it out for updates; There's a little bit of something for all '60s music fans at - The newest issue of Pet Sounds, a section of this web site, includes interviews with Sean Bonniwell of the Music Machine and Mike Evans of the Action; , the web site of a '60s - '70s garage band that is currently working on a new CD. Thanks to Lee Joseph, Jon Weiss, Ben Chaput, Kim Cooper, and Chip Chapin.
