Willis Alan Ramsey - 'Willis Alan Ramsey' Koch Records
 (RA) "Ballad Of Spider John"
Artist: Willis Alan Ramsey
Title: Willis Alan Ramsey
Label: Koch Records
Genre: Classic Country
This here's a re-release of a classic album from '72. Right on the front of the CD case there's a little sticker which reads 'Willis Alan Ramsey's record is one of the greatest records of all time.' Who said it? Lyle Lovett. Who am I to contradict a star!
And yes, this 40 minute piece of classic country is pretty damn good. 'Ballad of Spider John' begins it. Hard for me to make out some of the words - which is a bit of a problem for a story song - but I like the Sound of the voice, the playing, the arrangements. Just wish they'd printed the lyrics in the CD booklet. I'd like to know the whole story - and quote some things. (Oh, I just thought of something mean while listening to 'Muskrat Candlelight.' You know what I'm reminded of a little? Eddie Murphy singing his album of hits as Buckwheat. Well, it Does come to mind.)
Yet the more I listened to this album, the less it sounded strictly country to me. See, I grew up in the 70s, so I heard a lot of this SOUND. And, for instance, 'Wishbone' was the sort of thing that was played on the radio all the time. The way the piano behaves, the backing vocals singing against the lead voice, the vaudeville in the drums, yes, it brings it all back to a time when the Billboard charts weren't as segregated. EvEryOne used to listen to this stuff, and it's easy to see why. 'Watermelon Man' has the simplicity of grandpa on the back porch rocking and strumming at the same time.
