Thana is definitely a child of the 1960s. While Under the Same Moon with rock STARS and variable travelers on life's highway from obscurity to name recognition, and back to basics, the wife of Bob Harris has unearthed a ton of thoughts about the world, both inner and outer, and the best way of beating the system of life. To each his/her own, is her moto. And one which she embraces with a youthful passion that is both a delight and an inspiration to read.
In fact, those who are grabbing the book for Zappa facts are bound to be disappointed in the lack of dates and proper nouns. But by the time you get to that particular chapter, if you have any soul at all inside, you will be drawn into the magical poetry that is this authoress' charm. She writes like a giddy optimist fully aware of what hard luck is, having lived through tough times, and incredibly managing to come out of the fire glowing rather than blackened. While this IS a book about the Sleep Dirt singer and not the composer, you Are given the opportunity to hear, briefly, how Frank Zappa influenced one of the few female singers he ever used, and what said female thought during the entire process that made that now classic album possible.
But more importantly and more expansively are the pages dealing with Steve Vai's pre-fame days, when they all lived and ate in the same musical house. Interesting insights into Vai's mode of perfection and just how he lived life before David Lee Roth came into the picture.
Thana's style of writing is intensely conversational, as if you, the reader, are the old friend, the one trusted ear to which she can expound on life theories and the memories of what she did to keep going, thru good times and evil. Her clever phrases race around the short manuscript like the poetess she literally is and for this alone it's worth reading. Reason #1 to read, however, has to be the self-help part. To put this book in the self-help (maybe new age?) section rather than biography would be the way to go. Thana has an amazing ability to touch you right where you need it, asking questions, wondering, thinking about the big and small mysteries of life, personalities, music, love. Most of all, love.
No other book more deserves the moniker of Charm. It's got singular style. Non-fiction readers may scoff at the tone and amazed babble that sprinkles itself around, but the point is: here is an ordinary woman who's met and put her vocal skills into some extra-ordinary people. And the gratefulness for her luck and talent make it a tale a treat to behold.
