DigMedia Launches Dlocker, DigKiosk & Dboxer

There are plenty of consumer storage lockers out there, including iDrive, Driveway, MyDocsOnline, My.MP3.com and MyPlay, to name a few. DigMedia has launched their own, Dlocker. DigMedia is a multifaceted digital music distribution company, based in Carlsbad, CA with offices in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Dlocker is different from other storage lockers because it's a business to business play. DigMedia is not out to brand their Dlockers, but instead to provide a Dlocker service for any other brand out there. Their mission is to provide the tools and applications to companies striving to extend their brand awareness and promote customer loyalty through music.

DigMedia has the option to go out and get licensing from a record company and build out the label's catalog with the Dlocker infrastructure, and then to offer these services on behalf of the label. The other option – like with MGD – is to offer a simple locker service for a big brand's customers.

In the words of Todd Scholl, Marketing Communications Manager at DigMedia, "We have recently helped develop Miller Genuine Draft's locker site. www.mgdownload.com, using our technology and distribution platform. A user can download tracks, create playlists, even share his or her music. You can then tap into your personalized music locker from anywhere in the world that allows a Internet connection - giving the user universal access."

Like any virtual locker, it is accessible virtually. In addition, Dlocker's functionality includes a file-sharing option. But that does not mean that we have another Napster on our hands. Every user has a unique login and password, like most of these type of services. Users do not give their password to your friends to hang out in their 'locker,' but users can still share the music. How does this work?

With Dlocker, users have purchased or somehow already acquired their own MP3 collection and playlist. As far as DigMedia is concerned, users own these digital files. The key is in how we define sharing and DigMedia defines it thus: others can hear your music and see your playlist but will not have access to ownership nor to further distribution.

Another new DigMedia service is the DigKiosk, which is their 'retail music gateway. Instead of being limited to the local record store, these kiosks allow for the purchase of music to be physically delivered to a users home, be uploaded and sent to a digital locker or transferred locally to a portable MP3 player for immediate listening access. Mr. Scholl "explains, Currently, we have test units in various UK retail shops. These can be placed anywhere that gives them good public exposure. Strip malls, mega-malls, train stations, etc."

And the clincher is that you can also hit up one of these DigKiosks to buy a track or a digital album and add it not only to your Dlocker but to your Soulmate, which is their MP3 player. DigMedia envisions a future where all MP3 players will have a USB port, thereby making the DigKiosk compatible with all of them.
