Napster Gains Another Ally in TVT Records
TVT Records has caved!! Whoohoo!! The first of Napster's Lex Luthors has decided that to fight Napster now, in the hour of their baby steps to being good kids, is a poor idea.
So, perhaps TVT is truly dedicated to watching Napster come over to the other side – if there ARE sides – and perhaps they're just trying to reposition themselves. Even Napster's new sugar daddy, Bertelsmann, has yet to drop the charges. I guess they know when to hold 'em. So TVT is now Napster's greatest ally.
"I am afraid that copyright owners' resistance to finding workable solutions with Internet music providers may result in consumers, artists and the industry itself ultimately being harmed," said Steve Gottlieb, President and founder of TVT Records. "The future Napster offers the opportunity to reach music fans in unprecedented and as yet unimagined ways. Word-of-mouth has always been critical to breaking our artists – now we have harnessed the power of the fastest growing 'word-of-net' vehicle in existence. It is high time that the industry embraces a service that the public has so emphatically said they want."
So perhaps THAT is TVT's secret. The customer is always right. TVT says they plan to enter into promotions with Napster, as well. Until now, only indies and 'new model' record labels & music companies have taken such a leap of endorsement. Perhaps the rebels are not the only ones to see the benefit that p2p has for the music industry. And perhaps they're just waiting to see what transpires.
Meanwhile, Napster is – of course – thrilled to have one lawsuit dropped. But more importantly, this decision exemplifies the Napster position of just wanting to give the people what they want. Napster, the company, has no evil designs on copyright piracy or theft of intellectual property. Napster just really wants to be friends with everybody.
"We are very happy to be working with TVT," said Hank Barry, CEO of Napster. "Our new model will benefit tremendously from the expertise that Steve Gottlieb and the TVT team bring to the table on behalf of independent labels and artists. Moving this conversation from the courtroom to the boardroom helps us advance file sharing as a benefit to artists and songwriters as well as music fans. This new arrangement is further evidence that the alliance we developed with Bertelsmann is the right direction for the industry to take."
