Streaming - Practical Applications
Streaming Video Overview
Streaming for the Web is currently the best way to deliver video content to PCs. There are many applications for streaming video and many different ways of doing it – we’ll review some in this series.
Step 1: Streaming Video Defined
Streaming video is achieved with a streaming video player that you download, usually for free. As soon as you are connected to a site and you select a video to stream to your PC, the video almost instantaneously starts to play, after it is buffered.
Step 2: Buffering
Buffering occurs when you first start to stream and, if there is net congestion, throughout the streaming process. Buffering is basically storing or saving parts of the video stream so playback is smoother.
Step 3: Streaming vs Downloadable Video
Streaming video plays faster, approximating real time, depending on your connection. Downloadable video files, either in AVI or QuickTime file formats, are larger in size, can’t really be streamed efficiently, and are intended to play on your PC once they are saved on your hard drive.
Step 4: Constant Data Flow
Streaming is a constant and consistent process where the streaming player requests data from a server. The Internet connection that you have affects the quality of the video playback and picture. The faster your connection, the better your streaming video. Many sites give you the option to choose your connection speed – we’ll go over this in the following tutorials.
