*Collectables will be reissuing all four Thirteenth Floor Elevators albums ("Psychedelic Sounds Of," "Easter Everywhere," "Live," and "Bull Of The Woods") in a FOUR-CD box set this month. Unfortunately, it appears the box set will be a straight reissue only, with no additional bonus tracks. Also, scheduled is a FOUR-CD box set of albums by the Astronauts. Visit the web site at www.oldies.com

*The Soulbenders/Phlegethon "Michigan tapes" CD is now available. For the benefit of those of you that placed your orders early--since the initial announcements--a second "bonus disc" is now available. According to the web site, the disc contains "six newly found tracks that could not be included on the CD release: 25 minutes of additional material! Featured are: (1)The much sought after live version of "House Of Ten Rising Sun" by the Soulbenders recorded at the Braintree, Massachusetts' 1967 National "Battle of The Bands"; (2) The apparently planned B-Side to the unreleased third single, "Get Out of My Life Woman" by the SoulBenders from 1968; (3) A very rare 10 minute recording of a Soulbenders' live appearance on a local TV show (at 7AM!) in '67 which includes a live cover version of "Willy Jean" by the Blues Magoos. It also features an interview with all members; (4-6) Three more unreleased instrumental tracks by Phlegethon including a previously lost segment of "The Suite." To order, visit: http://www.arisdisc.com

*Thanks to http://www.dvdreview.com as the details on the upcoming double feature DVD "Just for The Hell of It" and "Blast Off Girls," by Something Weird Video, have been announced, and will include Trailers; a Gallery of Drive-In exploitation art; Drive-In intermission shorts; "Facts of Life" Drive-In book pitch; Trash-O-Rama radio-spot rarities; and "Let's Go to the Drive-In!" - An interactive feature allowing uninterrupted playback of three hours worth of exploitation Drive-In madness." "Just for the Hell of It" includes an excellent appearance by the Miami garage band New York Public Square Library, and "Blast Off Girls" features Chicago garage bands Charlie, and the Faded Blue. Both flicks are highly recommended by cheesy '60's movie aficionados.

*Thanks to a tip from Dan Nowicki in Scram #13, which features an excellent article on Hub Kapp & The Wheels--a '60's Phoenix combo spawned from the local Wallace & Ladmo children's show--I've learned that a CD by the band will soon be available via the Wallace & Ladmo website, www.thewallaceandladmoshow.net For those unfamiliar with the band, they were a made-up combo, featuring local personality Pat McMahon, who made it big regionally, and parlayed their success into an appearance on "The Steve Allen Show." The CD includes all three singles released by the band as well as an unreleased cut. Mike Condello played a major part in the band's success.

*John Einarson ( jeinarso@mbnet.mb.ca), author of a previous book on Buffalo Springfield, has just completed "Desperados: The Roots of Country Rock," published by Cooper Square Press. Though the book will not hit stores until March or April, advance copies are now available directly from the author. According to a posting on the Buffalo Springfield mailing list, "'Desperados' is a lengthy 300 pages with 16 pages of illustrations, and traces the evolution of country rock out of Southern California between 1963 and 1973. All the artists, who pioneered that genre, [are included]. Close to sixty interviews were conducted for the book." Artists covered include the Byrds, Gene Clark, Buffalo Springfield, Dillard & Clark, International Submarine Band, Flying Burrito Brothers, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Retail price is $19.95 U.S., but John is selling advance copies at $17.95 U.S. Interested parties should email the author directly.

*Due this month from Dionysus Records(http://www.dionysusrecords.com) is the next batch of Tony The Tyger Sanchez's highly acclaimed 'Fuzz, Flaykes, & Shakes' series. According to Tony, here's what we can expect: "Vol. 4: 'Experiment in Color.' This volume sounds like a combo of Volume 1 & 2 with some insane psych punk stuff, as well as some garage. The acetate of the Canterbury Fair was recorded during the same session as their 45 'Song on A May Morning.' Last year, we were in the process of reissuing an EP of the 45, and [one of] 'The Man,' and had no clue of what Sundazed was doing with their material. Sundazed went ahead and released their project, which was a larger release, but they didn't have the recorded version of 'The Man,' so [we] released a live version instead. This recorded version is way better and really good psych punk." Featured artists include The Rock Shop, Trojans of Evol, The Primates, The Soultans, The Epics, and The Menaces. Volume 5 "is a mixture of garage, folk rock, and a bit of psych--similar to Volume 3. The cover is the Topsy Turbys, and the track we used from an incredibly rare EP that has the photo of the group in Turbans." Featured artists include The Bram Rigg Set, The Continentals, The Other Four, The Burlington Express, The Insects, The Seven Dwarfs, and The Sons Of Adam.

*Though first reported a few months back, Dionysus Records has also just released four CDs that all garage band fans will want to check out: HTP, Harley Toberman's teen '60s band that recorded at Dove Studios and is best remembered for their "Cool Breeze" instrumental; Sonny Flaharty & The Mark V, which includes the excellent "Hey Conductor," once described as containing "the most flagrant psychedelic lyric ever written"; The East Side Sound Part 2: Featuring Mark & The Escorts, more East Los Angeles tunes by the likes of the Premiers, Cassinos, The Enchantments, and the title band, and Legend City Volume One, the first in a series of releases compiling the best of Loy Clingman's Viv-Debra recording studio. Bands include The Door Nobs, The Hobbit, The Wild Flowers, The Solid Ground, and The Hearsemen. All four volumes are recommended, particularly the Sonny Flaharty and Legend City discs.

*On January 26, The Secret Cinema presented "Nuggets: Celluoid Artyfacts of Sixties Rock" at the Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia. From the web site: "This unique hodgepodge of ultra-rare reels consists of various short films and television shows--almost all never shown before by the Secret Cinema (or anyone else, since they were made)-- showcasing mod, garage and pop music from the mid-to-late 1960's. To make it even more of a once-in-a-lifetime event, we'll have Stewkey (lead singer and keyboardist of Philadelphia's greatest '60s band, The Nazz) on hand to present and discuss a rare print of the promo film for 'Open My Eyes'." The print is reportedly from Stekey's personal collection, and is an alternate edit of the one that has previously aired on MTV. Other films to be shown include "Girls in Short Short Dresses" (1966), a Paramount short featuring the mod band, The Thoughts; and 'The Ecstacy Is Sometimes Fantastic' (1966), a film by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation featuring Toronto garage band Jon and Lee and the Checkmates. Check out the Cinema's web site at www.voicenet.com/~jschwart

*Denny Carleton, of the Lost Souls and the Choir, has recently released a two CD "Denny Carleton Retro" set that compiles songs from various stages of his long and impressive musical career. Also, available are two 8-song cassettes of both the Lost Souls and the Choir. For more information, please visit the Denny Carleton site at http://www.dennycarelton.com

*Keep an eye out for an import CD from Warner's UK Division titled "The Monkees - Definitive Collection." It's a "Greatest Hits collection with a bonus CD on initial pressing only of 31 tracks consisting of out-takes, alternative versions and off cuts." No word yet on what tracks are included.

*Thanks to Haydn Jones, the following information is finally available on the long promised Prunes' 'Lost Dreams' CD/LP: "A special 1000 limited edition vinyl release of 'Lost Dreams' is to be issued to compliment the CD version. It will comprise a two record set, each in a photo sleeve all lovingly housed in a unique & deluxe gatefold sleeve. Also included will be an exclusive collectors 12 X 12 insert featuring all of the Electric Prunes rare plus overseas single & EP releases in glorious colour." Heartbeat Productions is releasing the album. Special Thanks to Denny Carleton, John Einarson, Haydn Jones, Lee Joseph, Tony Sanchez, Jay Schwartz, and Ben Tyler.
