I managed to catch Spragga Benz ‘pon him endz’ while he was taking a short break from his gruelling workload. I wanted to find out what he had been keeping him busy since his last interview with the Dainty Crew in May 1999.
He talked of his work with one of the hottest ladies of Rap, Foxy Brown. He met her at a studio to work on a remix for one of her tracks and this lead to the recording of ‘Too Stoosh’ which features on his third and most recent album ‘Fully Loaded’.
‘Fully Loaded’ was released earlier this year in May and is packed with hot tracks and has something on offer for all of Spragga’s fans. He collaborates with artists including the first lady of Dancehall Lady Saw, Sugar Slick and Brian & Tony Gold. The production is tight and put together by the likes of Todd Terry, Dave Kelly, Salaam Remi and Donovan Germain to name a few.
The album features some of Spragga’s earlier hits, which were released as singles namely, ‘Wi Nuh Like’, ‘Some Bwoy’ and most recently ‘Supposed To Know’. If that wasn’t enough he also offers many new tunes and with such a catalogue of hits under his belt Spragga has effortlessly found 21 quality tracks to fill the album. Also keep your eyes peeled for the video to accompany ‘Weh Yuh A Seh Star’.
When Spragga’s not concentrating on his own hits he co-produces with Rookie Productions. The Benz also continues to support the Jamaican ‘Stay In School’ campaign. Due to time restraints he has been unable to contribute to the campaign as much as he would like to but he plans to get books into a community library when he returns home.
The vast majority of dancehall DJs are not backwards in coming forwards and Spragga is no exception. "There is always room for improvement but everyone is entitled to their freedom of speech", was his response to the issue on the Jamaican’s government’s decision to clamp down on slack lyrics and bad language. He wasn’t too impressed with their decision to tighten up the copyright laws either because has he put it, "It’s like another form of slavery".
Spragga has set up a record label by the name of Red Square, named after the area in which he grew up. He as yet to voice any artists on the label but keep a look out for the label which will feature new talent.
If you want to remain fully informed on the Benz then the best place for this is on his official web site at www.spraggabenz.com.
