His fans better know Patrick Ricardo Jackson as Harry Toddler. Born 26 years ago at Jubilee Hospital in Kingston, Jamaica, Toddler grew up in the capital city and attended Halfway Tree primary school.
Toddler got his stage name through a couple of producers who heard him doing a track under his original stage name of Dirty Harry. The punch line of the track had the word Toddler in it and the producers asked him why he called himself Dirty Harry. Toddler recalls, "Dem change it an seh Harry Toddler, so dat was dat".
Toddler was well known as a member of the infamous Scare Dem Crew out of Seaview Gardens and got his break with the group through the producers Sly & Robbie. It was when Toddler and Elephant Man did the track incorporating the catchy phrase "well I don't care for you nor your flippin' crew" on the Setup rhythm and Toddler says, "That was a group time". He has since gone solo, but Scare Dem had a whirlwind session of hits and also released an album called 'Scared From The Crypt'.
As a solo artist his most successful single to date has been 'Dance The Angel' on the Scarface rhythm. The track spawned a dance called The Angel and gets the crowd moving at any event. The term 'angel' is readily associated with Harry Toddler and he has an album in the making that will be entitled 'Star Angel'. This is due out in 2001 on VP Records.
Being a DJ is not where Toddler's skills set ends. He has also been thinking about production and has built his own rhythm and produced a track on his album. The rhythm name is Raindrops. He has also written tracks for other people including his fellow Scare Dem Crew members such as Elephant Man, Boom Dandemite and Nitty Kutchie. He says, "I help dem. Give dem some parts".
His inspiration for writing songs comes from "just a spiritual vibes" and also from experiences in life. The track 'Watch Yuh Friends' was inspired from personal experience as Toddler says, "Your friends will never let you down. Not dem frien' weh frien' yuh for weh yuh have. Dem nuh really clean. So, is a message to all who listen Reggae music an all over de worl' who know seh yuh mus watch yuh friends cah your friend can be your worst enemy".
There has been a lot of talk about whether Toddler has become a born again Christian and he categorically denies this stating, "No, I am not a Christian, but certain things went down like my daughter died, my friend died, my uncle died. So me say to me mother to carry me go church. Everyone can come church. You can go church coupla days and say OK, you understand? Me jus' wan' get tings off my mind". Sadly, Toddler's daughter only lived for a week and his friend and uncle were killed making him disinclined to do any music for a time and so the rumour mill started.
Luckily for his fans, Toddler came back into the music mix and although he says himself that he "no too sing a one slack lyrics song now", he still has many a tune in the making.
A lot of people also wonder why Scare Dem Crew split up and we felt it was an opportunity for Toddler to give his side of the story. He says, "Scare Dem's one of the biggest group from Jamaica. Like me friends dem, me nuh know, like dem do some back-door deal OK cah Toddler's the one weh never deh in de USA. So, most of de tings dem now, what they did, me really feel hurt cah dem a go do some tings behind me back an people come tell me about it… Me deh on me own an' me feel comfortable". He does point out though that Scare Dem Crew are still friends.
Due to his limitations in terms of a visa to perform in the USA, Toddler has toured the Caribbean, Canada, Costa Rico and England. He has worked with a plethora of producers including True Blue, King Jammys, Buccaneer for Opera House, Steely (& Cleevie), Sly & Robbie, Flabba, In Da Streets, Shocking Vibes and countless more. As he puts it "me jus work"! Toddler also now has his own label called Star Angel.
The movie 'Third World Cop' was another vehicle to showcase the many facets and talents of Toddler as he acted in the film alongside a number of other Dancehall and Reggae artists. He says that he enjoyed working on the movie, "It was a very nice experience… it have a nice vibe" and wouldn't mind adding an acting slant to his career. He believes, "I'm an actor. From yuh see me, yuh see a movie star".
Back to the music business, there are a few changes he'd like to see, but the main one is for "DJ dem fe come together… Coming like de unity nuh deh inna de business". He named artists such as Capleton, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Sizzla, Scare Dem and Monster Shack saying "de whole a we mus live as one".
Toddler enjoys listening to sound systems such as Stone Love, Adonai, Renaissance and African Roots. He says, "Those are my sounds".
For the future, Toddler is planning on getting married in December 2000 and setting up his website. His final message for his fans is, "Never stop supporting Toddler". Since The Dainty Crew took their name from Toddler's catchphrase when he called himself the "dainty boy", we'll definitely be supporting this star angel for the foreseeable future.
