Rex Brown, Pantera

This tour is supreme, the line up itself conjures visions of an awesome experience. Nothingface, Morbid Angel, Soulfly and Pantera - what more could you ask?

Nothingface opened the show with all the adrenaline necessary to sustain the evening. For many, this tour is introducing Nothingface for the first time and from the reaction of Chicago, Illinois, I think they've takin' hold. Nothingface is touring to support their recent release "Violence." "Violence" is a great piece of work, just straight forward in your face hard-core. This definitely wont be the end of their touring career. I fully expect to see them emerge again this summer.

Steve Tucker, Morbid Angel
After Nothingface's adrenaline based introduction, Morbid Angel grabbed the reins, Taking us for a ride into the black. These veterans of Death Metal exploded on stage dragging us all into their realm. Morbid Angel is successfully paving the way for Death Metal to rear it's head among the mainstream, giving fans a taste of the darker depths of music and showing many, the talent it has to offer. Intricately written instrumentals paired with grasping deep vocals grab hold and whisk you into the pit, often without permission. Morbid Angel's last CD, "Love of Lave," is a masterpiece of sound that was released as a bonus CD with the 1999 re-issue of "Formulas fatal to the Flesh." The guys have managed to stay atop the Death Metal genre for over a decade now and it seems that there is no end in site for the reining masters of the black.

Morbid Angel gave way to Soulfly's thunder and Max's immense vocals. Max took Soulfly into the studio in late 1997 after his fifteen year standing as front-man for Sepultura ended. Their latest recording, "Primitive," is a tribute to Max's own inner turmoil and struggles with turning anger into a positive endeavor. Max's lyrics connect with fans in a deep way, giving them an outlet for their own aggressions. He seems to funnel all of societies inner demons, giving them the voice they've longed for. This is why his fan base is so strong and unshakable, he has earned the name "great one" (in my vocabulary) and I don't see anyone taking his place anytime soon. The music content that "Primitive" provides is depicted accurately in the cover art for the album. The legendary Phoenix emerging from the blazing fire is a perfect description of the message within.

Max Cavalera, Soulfly
Soulfly's stage performance is as hard hitting as their music. I've seen them three times now and I don't ever see myself getting bored with their performance. Even my first show at seven months pregnant, Max's strong lyrics and vocals paired with the awesome sounds of tribal aggression, left me with a lasting imprint even from the back of the club.

After Soulfly's awe-stricking performance under the roof of the UIC pavilion, Pantera emerged with the fire of southern hospitality in tow. Pantera has managed to sustain a never ending fan base that stretches back twelve great years. They still manage to deliver an outstanding metal performance that their fans have come to expect. Phil's grinding vocals and lovely aggression come across loud and clear, no matter what your vantage point. His voice is unmistakable and mixes with the band's instrumentation like sweet tea on a Dixie girls lips.

Phil Anselmo, Pantera

Pantera's latest release, "Reinventing the Steel," holds its ground among Pantera greats like "Cowboys from Hell" and "Vulgar display of Power." It delivers the great southern metal sound that has become Pantera's trademark. The confederate flags flew high throughout Pantera's amazing stage performance and pirotech explosions. The music jolted fans into a frenzied pit of respect that never seemed to quench Phil's thirst. Pantera will hold their throne for a great while to come and they will be giving us another taste of why this summer with metal greats, Slayer.

This tour kicked my ass all over Chicago and if it has yet to hit your area, do your ass a favor and check it out.
