News and Nuggets: Dovers / Dionysus / Monkees / Sundazed / The Shadows Of Knight / Moby Grape...
*This might be the biggest and best news that we've had the good fortune of presenting for quite some time: Alec Palao has
informed me that he's working on a Dovers compilation that will include unreleased material. The band released four incredibly
fantastic singles and is legendary among collectors of '60's garage band music. Apparently, according to Alec, there is going to be an
Italian bootleg of the band's singles released shortly, but there is no way to expedite his release. I'll be sure to stay on top of this. In
the meantime, Alec's next release for Ace/Big Beat is "Scarey Business: Punk From Titan, Downey, and Modern", three primo L.A.
labels from the mid-'60's. Bands featured include the Brain Train, the Wooly Ones, the Electric Company, and the Wylde Knights -
Rick Dey's garage band that recorded the original version of Paul Revere & The Raiders' "Just Like Me." Also on tap is "Northwest
Battle of The Bands, Volume Two," with more excellent released and unreleased material by bands such as the New Yorkers, the
Bards, Don & The Goodtimes, the Bumps, and the Springfield Rifle. Alec promises four more volumes of the Northwest series, all
containing songs as good as or better than the initial volume. Quite a feat, indeed . . .
*Dionysus has two excellent upcoming releases that will hopefully be out by the time you read this: "Blue Sandlewood Soap:
Loring Park Love-Ins Revisited" (CD only). If this sounds familiar, it's because Get Hip Archives released a similarly titled CD a few
years back. Dionysus, however, promises a package with better sound, different graphics and, more importantly, additional tracks.
The Soap were Harley Toberman's post-HT3 band, and hailed from Minneapolis/St. Paul; Also on tap is "The Redcoats: Meet The
Redcoats - Finally" (LP/CD). The Redcoats were a Beatles influenced combo that recorded an entire album that has remained
unreleased for 35 years until now. This one sounds very promising. Check out www.dionysusrecords.com for more information.
*Rhino Handmade will be releasing another new Monkees CD set. Titled "Summer 1967: The Complete U.S. Concert Recordings,"
the CD will be an individually numbered limited edition of 3,500. The set will consist of four CDs, and be a "64-track collection of
the complete, surviving recordings of The Monkees 1967 tour of The United States Of America," and comprise four complete
concerts. "All the audience screaming, all the instrument tuning, all the stage banter, every note from every song performed by The
Monkees. The height of Monkeemania in your very own living room" is promised. The package includes a 40-page 1967 tour photo
diary booklet. Also due shortly from Rhino Handmade is The Stalk-Forrest Group CD "St. Cecilia: The Elektra Recordings,"
available as an individually-numbered limited edition of 5,000 copies. The Stalk-Forrest Group recorded these tracks in 1969-1970,
and eventually became Blue Oyster Cult. Visit www.rhinohandmade.com
*Sundazed www.sundazed.com is currently taking pre-orders for a slew of new '60's CD and vinyl releases. Previously announced
titles include three albums by the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band; "J.K. & Co.: Suddenly Last Summer"; and "The Love
Exchange: The Love Exchange," a title that was first announced a few years back. Titles not previously announced include "Music
Emporium: Music Emporium," a re release of a 1969 album by an L.A. band; "Afterglow: Afterglow," a 180 gram vinyl release of a
title previously available on CD only; and "The Millennium: Magic Time: The Millennium/Ballroon Sessions," a 3-CD, 62 track
release of Curt Boettcher and Keith Olsen produced bands.
*The Shadows Of Knight were filmed as an "in concert" guest on a PBS Television Special taped at the Park Ponderosa Ballroom
in Madison, Wisconsin on March 18th. Lead singer Jimy Sohns apparently was joined by original guitarist Joe Kelley (none of the
original members currently tour with the Sohns-led SOK). Sky Saxson of the Seeds reportedly also joined the band on stage.
*According to a posting on the Bomp-List, Moby Grape is scheduled for a performance on June 16th, 2001 at the San Diego Museum
of Art in Balboa Park in San Diego. Jerry Miller, Peter Lewis, Bob Mosley, James Preston (of the Sons Of Champlin) and Mike
Fornatale comprise the line-up. Other bands performing reportedly will include Big Brother and The Holding Company and the
Strawberry Alarm Clock(!). According to the post, there may be other bands added shortly.
*Love 'em or hate 'em, there is a slew of recent John Fred & His Playboy Band retrospective CDs available or soon to be available.
Late last year, Magic Records released a twofer of two John Fred '60's albums, "Agnes English" and "Permanently Stated" on one
CD. Released this past month by Westside Records is "With Glasses: The Very Best Of John Fred & His Playboy Band," a 30 track
collection spanning the years 1964 - 1969. Promised for early April release is "John Fred & His Playboy Band: Absolutely The
Best," a repackaging of Westside's "Very Best of" release but with fewer tracks. Though the band's best known hit was "Judy In
Disguise (With Glasses)," they did toe the line between garage and psychedelia on a handful of releases.
*Be on the lookout for a new CD release entitled "Little Boy Blues: In the Woodland of Weir," released by Acid Symposium, a
label operating out of Greece. The disc reportedly includes "every track by this great Chicago band. Ferocious fuzz psych 45s plus
the 1968 Fontana chamber psych LP with Mark Caplan from the Wizards of Kansas." We'll hopefully have more information as it
*Mike "Smitty" Smith, drummer for Paul Revere & The Raiders, passed away March 6th in Hawaii. Smitty was with the band
since 1962. He was 58 years old. The Sundazed web site also noted that Don Shephard, lead guitarist for the E-Types, passed away
in late 2000. R.I.P Smitty and Don.
*The newest issue of "Ugly Things" (#19 already...incredible!) will be out in late May, or early June. The featured story is an
interview with Kim Fowley, and related article include stories on Something Wild, The Churchills, The Boys, Gandalf, and the
Chants. For more information, visit www.ugly-things.com
*WEB SITE WATCH: Beth Ellis has created a new fan web site for the Gants: www.websitegalaxy.com/gantgirl Apparently she has
recently renewed her friendship with the band after 35 years. The site features some nice photos, a Fan Forum, and a Gants News
page. Special Thanks to Gary Belich, Lee Joseph, Aaron Madden, Alec Palao, Stefan/Subliminal Sounds, and Ben Szporluk.
