Artist: David Crosby
Title: If I Could Only Remember My Name
Label: Classic Records (www.classicrecords.com)
Genre: Folk-Rock
Format: 180 gm Vinyl LP

Most people may find it surprising that David Crosby released a solo album in 1971. He invited everyone that was part of the San Francisco music scene to join him in the studio, including Jerry Garcia, Grace Slick, Gregg Rolie, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and many others. Crosby obviously was plugged into the current scene, and he really had established himself as an equal with the other artists from that era.

This is a very mellow album, and it comes out sounding like a CSNY album without Young, even though Young is a guest. That by any measure is a good thing. Crosby manages to stand out and claim this as his session regardless of the similarities in sound to his full time band. Its hard not to sound like CSNY, as the only member that doesn’t make an appearance is Stephen Stills.

It is unfortunate that Crosby fell into a pit of self-destruction with drugs, and he would not release another solo album for ten years. I can’t imagine how wonderful a career he could have had if he had stayed on the straight and narrow, and continued to develop as a performer. For forty minutes forget about what could have been…just enjoy this.

This LP is remastered and released on virgin vinyl with the original artwork and gatefold sleeves. It comes complete with sound as clear as a pool of icy blue water from a mountain stream. It’s unquestionably proper treatment for a classic rock-folk album.
