WERS - Live from Emerson College Emerson Records
Artist: Various
Title: WERS - Live from Emerson College
Label: Emerson Records
Coming to you live from the Anson Building overlooking traffic, construction and other Beantown traditions, it’s Emerson Records’s first collection of some of the best musical talents from Boston and beyond. From the soulful sparseness of Martin Sexton’s a cappella sermon on individuality (a.k.a. "Black Sheep") to the big Big Band sound of Black Tie Affair's tribute to the home of the Chiefs and Royals (a.k.a. "Kansas City") and Mr. Lif’s driving hip-hop pledge driving, Live offers quite a lot of music, most of which is notable in its selection and recording. Representing Boston’s strong female front are the narrative pick n’ hush of Catie Curtis, the subtle subterfuge of Faith Soloway and the heart-burning sweetly acidic vocals of Lori McKenna. You want power trios? Boston’s got some of the most powerful right now, including the open arrangements of The Push Stars, the funk frenzies of Jim’s Big Ego and a beautifully stripped Guster. Rock more your thing? Well, for older school fans, we got the power-chorded crash of The Shods, while those who want to learn to play guitar might prefer the raucous feedback of Gigolo Aunts. Got a friend who likes all ages ska punk shows at the VFW? Big D can fill that kid’s table as much as their sound and stage antics filled 'ERS’s spacious studios. You may not know every band and the songs might not be your faves, but that’s what college radio is for. Try it out and you’ll probably want to try it out.
