Donny Osmond in Concert
Oakdale Theater, Wallingford, CT - June 24, 2001
My wife fulfilled a lifetime dream a few weeks ago when she saw her childhood heartthrob Donny Osmond after waiting patiently for over thirty years. What made me realize what a great talent Donny and his sister Marie were? My wife’s coercing to watch their daytime variety show. The show grew on me daily. My wife would tape it while we were at work during the day, and when the kids went to bed we would unwind with Donny & Marie.
Most recently I ran into a local record store and presented Donny’s new CD "This Is The Moment" to my wife. We both have been enjoying it immensely for many weeks now. Donny covers classic Broadway tunes with all the class and professionalism that he has acquired by being in the music business all of his life.
The next thing we did was get on the Internet to see where Donny’s concert tour was taking him. Wallingford, CT is about 2 hours away from our hometown Adams, Massachusetts. We decided to get two tickets for the concert. It was my wife’s fortieth birthday, what could be more fitting than fulfilling a lifetime dream after moving into middle age?
The day finally arrived. We were on our way for our big night. Before the concert there was a buzz and energy in the air. The women are absolutely crazy about this man, from five years old to eighty. And that was the cross section of age groups that was in attendance at the packed house that evening. It was an amazing thing to see.
I am not sure what I enjoyed more, the music, or watching my wife be transformed to a little girl again. It was no doubt one of the highlights of her life. It made me feel so good to see her enjoying herself like that. I enjoyed myself too. Donny is a wonderful entertainer. He has an awesome voice and a crackerjack band to back him up. He is first class all the way.
This was a nostalgic night to be sure. He sang many of the songs off of his new album and he did a few of the standards like "Puppy Love." This connection to his past will never go away, and that’s just fine with his fans. They all expect him to perform songs like that.
At different times during the concert Donny took a break and sat at the edge of the stage and talked to us about the process of his new album, his life, and his career. I felt like I was in a room with a big family that grew up together. It was unlike anything that I have ever experienced before.
There were times I must admit, that I got chills listening to Donny hit those high notes and hold them. He also showed he was human by forgetting words to a song one time and also losing his voice. I would be willing to bet there wasn’t a person there that could have cared less. Donny was a good sport about it and laughed lightheartedly and continued his performance as if nothing ever happened.
This was truly a night to remember for my wife and I. I would not hesitate to do it again. Donny Osmond is a real down to earth person with many talents. We all should be grateful to have known him and enjoyed his family for all of these years. If he is coming to a venue near you make sure you don’t miss it. You will never forget an evening like only Donny Osmond can provide. This is the moment…seize it.
